Fault with Orcon? Major international route outage? Upstream provider fault?
Nothing on Orcon's Network Status page so far, about this issue.

Hi Sounddude,

Most sites seem to be working correctly now, except the ones hosted on Equinix Sydney - 117.121.253.45
Certain sites require a DNS change (from Orcon DNS to Google, Level3 etc) to load properly, like computerworld.com and steampowered.com, possibly related to Equinix Sydney CDN.

Thanks

All the sites I mentioned above are now reachable with no issues. I would hazard a guess that something beyond Orcon's control caused this.

Hi there.

As I understand (was told) this issue is because of recent changes Orcon made to their Sandvine appliance.
So as we know this is all to do with very intensive shaping.
This is done in different way depending on one's connection being Orcon purple or telecom wholesale.
The difference is: 10-fold increase in latency for some international sites that pass through 121.98.104.2 (i.e. www.google.com)

Wow, so Orcon both uses data caps AND traffic shaping? They must be skimping on international transit costs :S

I can understand one or the other but shaping an already capped account is a misleading service in my opinion.

Yes with residential connections bandwidth can be considered a fixed resource, they buy how much they can afford given how many users they have then share it out as best they can.

Practically all ISP's do some form or traffic management or shaping to ensure good QoS, it just seems theirs is a bit messed up at the moment and having the opposite effect to what is intended.

gaming, voip > general web, email > streaming video > bulk/downloads

They have had a terrible few months and if I was a customer I wouldn't have stuck with them.

They do seem to be making a lot of big changes, so if you are the stick it out type of person you'll probably have to just relax and keep reporting the issues so they can get fixed.

Hi DAuckland

Yes Orcon traffic manages. Its somethnig we have always admitted to.,

However, we don't treat LLU vs Telecom Wholesale any different.

There isn't an increase of icmp lancy due to our shaping, especially not via 121.98.104.2 which is our google interconnect in Sydney.
