Anyone know why this isn't generally available on any random android phone that supports it? My 2degrees coverage isn't great at home and my Nexus 6P (soon to be a Pixel 3) supports wifi calling on carriers in other countries....

According to their website, phones imported from overseas aren't supported. Phone from other telcos require a software update. https://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/help-and-support/mobile/products-and-services/wifi-calling/

Need someone to hack it similar to Orcon Genius. I've had plenty of occasions when I would have used this but for having the wrong model phone. I appreciate 2dm couldn't support anything but the official software, but having the option would be nice.

To turn this around, what is special about the 2 degrees implementation that requires their own special firmware for a non standard implementation of wifi calling when other, international telecos have this working successfully?

Is it just because they don't want to support what other carriers are able to support (and this can be a valid reason).

I appreciate that there is no obligation to provide answers, however, it would be nice to have the standard implementation not locked out and only their local one supported.

If other NZ Telecos implement this, I would hope they would use the standard setup instead of the locally modified one 2 degrees uses.

2degrees does not use a 'non standard implementation of wifi calling'. We use 3GPP IMS core and GSMA IR.51 VoWifi service. Our VoLTE service, when it launches, will be GSMA IR.92. However, SIP standards are much more open to interpretation than traditional telecommunications standards and there are always interoperability niggles to be sorted out. We sort them out for the handsets we support. But we don't want to be fielding calls from people who want to roll their own but are having niggles.

That's the trade-off: more flexibility means more ways to achieve the same thing, which in turn means more ways to disagree on what is the right way.

Good to see the Huawei Nova 3i supports Wi-Fi calling as shown on the 2degrees tech specs page for the handset but not listed on the Wi-Fi calling supported list

What's in the rom update from 2 Degrees for VoWifi?
Any chance of this info to get it working on custom roms on One Plus devices.

I'm wondering the same thing myself and beginning to suspect it's just the IMS apn missing, Considering the OnePlus devices (at least my OP6) allow for very easy enabling of WiFi Calling with a history of others getting them working on other carriers internationally and 2D already support other OPPO phones I'm tempted to try and get my hands on something that already works with it and try and replicate the settings.

I'd have to say I've been very impressed with my mate 20 pro. Out of the box (supplied by another carrier) vowifi simply needed to be enabled on the phone and it was happy to go.

It's only my 2degrees sim that shows the option. So seems its picking up the detail from somewhere

@saltynz hoping you might know the answer to this one..

I've noticed on my network, vowifi hasn't been working. I have been blaming my router setup, poking holes in everything for a few months now... ipsec and older pfsense distros aren't exactly friends afterall...

Completely rebuilt my setup on a very basic setup, mikrotik terminating PPPoE no rules apart from nat. Still wasn't happy.

then i noticed the trick.. if i turn flight mode on (thus dropping roaming onto VF) vowifi comes up, not only on my new setup but my old setup too!

is there a logical handover reason as to why a 3g roaming session (standby) isn't allowed to connect up to vowifi?

Watching the traffic, the dns call is always made, but it simply wont attempt the ipsec tunnel at all.

As a side note, i'd welcome a 3g carrier on waitroua transmission tower to avoid this ;)

Anyway, no, no reason why it shouldn’t just use VoWifi whenever it can. FWIW I have a Mikrotik router too, running PPPoE to an NF4V. No issues with VoWifi.

Seems like some people have had success getting WiFi calling working in other counties, it seems like the only missing step for getting it to work on 2degrees is selecting the correct profile. For phones with a modern Snapdragon SoC, it can be done with QPST as explained here. I'm a bit reluctant to try it out myself as modifying the radio is even more risky than rooting/flashing ROMs, but I'm curious if anyone is brave enough to try it out?

I don't know the technical details of VoWiFi and why setting it up is so much more complicated than any other communication standard (e.g. LTE) that a white list would be required to reduce support requests, but it certainly is very disappointing that we can't simply bring our own device. In fact, from the research I've done so far, some telcos overseas don't even impose a white list.
