doublehell: 10:40pm, and still useless for anything except static sites and locally served pages. Might as well be back in the day of 256/128 or 128/128.

I would be switching ISP's for sure and disputing any early termination fee's

Here's what im getting with PlaNet, I left Orcon when I switched to fiber because they never returned my calls.

compared to last night:

So in a nutshell, there isn't enough downstream bandwidth to go around.

TBH, I can live with it slowing down a bit at night as you'd expect in NZ, but when it drops below what you'd get on 256k, when your paying for fibre, it's pretty shocking.

IMO the minimum speed these days for a connection to be considered broadband is 3 Mb/s. Anything below 1 Mb/s is disgusting.

True, but the internet is the internet, regardless of the technology used to deliver it over the last mile. Fibre is more about futureproofing and reliability than all-out speed IMHO, that's why I remain perfectly happy with the 30/10 speed option.

That said, as an Orcon customer, I have found their connection speed to be bordering on unusable in recent times. I switched from the "unlimited' plan to the 60GB one in the hopes of alleviating this, alas to no effect.

A bit of transparency from Orcon wouldn't go amiss here, starting with an acknowledgement that there's a problem, and what they're going to do about it, and when.

They'd be opening up a can of worms by making a pubilic notice that their network is suffering attacks and is impairing their ability to deliver an acceptable level of service/performance.

They are required to address the issue within a reasonable timeframe, and if they can't then they become vulnerable to litigation. A reasonable amount of time is always subject to interpretation, and would depend on the situation, but I think anything stretching into "months" is pretty bad

To be honest it would be refreshing for a ISP to go yes we stuffed up but hey we are trying to fix it.

Also yes people complain when what they are paying for isn't received, not just ISP

maybe the attack is bittorrent opening too many connections at once?

DDOS attacks have ramped up lately.... I saw 800mbit to one DSL user the other day and GGI had a few massive DDOS attacks taking out 90% of the total throughput.

Its not limited to Orcon this is a NZ wide problem, ISP's that push the bandwidth to the limits already start experncing issues with DDOS attacks. I've seen a 2gibit DDOS attack.

I would be not surprised if Orcon have somewhere between 4gbit - 5gbit of bandwidth via their transit provider and a 2gig DDOS means massive drops in speed.

My Experiences with these attacks is they last 1 - 2 hours and often 2 or 3 per night, Its not one big long DDOS attack this is why the problem only happens during peak the DDOS only appear to happen during the peak times.

fibre speeds aren't likely to be any worse on average than dsl speeds.

say they do have < 10 gigabit transit. if they have multiple 10 gigabit upstreams and they null route the ip's of the ddos they should be fine?
