Nebbie:

Nebbie:
Correction there's not enough bandwidth to allow customers normal traffic though and Massive DDOS attacks.
This thread has got to be the biggest rant thread I've seen in a while.......

One can only assume then that the attach is being directed at Orcon themselves as they would have taken action against the target customer by now.

Also a month long DDoS is quite a long time for a sustained attack... Must have pissed someone off real bad.

DDOS attacks have ramped up lately.... I saw 800mbit to one DSL user the other day and GGI had a few massive DDOS attacks taking out 90% of the total throughput.

Its not limited to Orcon this is a NZ wide problem, ISP's that push the bandwidth to the limits already start experncing issues with DDOS attacks. I've seen a 2gibit DDOS attack.

I would be not surprised if Orcon have somewhere between 4gbit - 5gbit of bandwidth via their transit provider and a 2gig DDOS means massive drops in speed.

My Experiences with these attacks is they last 1 - 2 hours and often 2 or 3 per night, Its not one big long DDOS attack this is why the problem only happens during peak the DDOS only appear to happen during the peak times.

So why isn't the International transit provider doing something about mitigating these "DDOS" attacks isn't that part of what they're supposed to do

Hi all,
Just an update from us.
We had an issue with the Sandvine overnight that some of you would have noticed - and will have affected performance.
We are also waiting for more bandwidth to be provisioned. I don't have a date at the moment, but will let you know when I do. The team is pretty confident that this, and some other changes here, will get the service back to at least previous levels.
Again - apologies from us, we are working on it and hope to have a resolution soon.
Thanks, Quentin

Thanks for the update Quentin.  But does that mean we will have to wait even longer to get usable internet at night? I've given up gaming due to erratic pings and speeds at night... We pay alot of money for Orcons service, yet we get less than 3G speeds most nights...

Meh... Better than it was last night, but still pretty rubbish...

Still don't get why the pings constantly jump around, I usually get 45ms to Sydney.  Even with Slingshot and them slamming the daylights out of traffic to keep it steady the ping never went up so much.

Tested the Telstra server also, it peaked 27Mb/s for a couple seconds then promptly dropped to this...

doublehell: All normal this evening.

To Telstra Sydney:

To Orcon:

How about to anywhere in the US? I was playing LoL before (maybe 8.30) and got 350 ping for a the whole game (~25mins), was a noticeable 1-2 second delay/lag on everything.

Trying to watch a 360p twitch stream, soon as I open a international webpage while watching the stream, it stops and buffers... fail!

To Atlantic metro in LA:

Latency is normal, downstream is about 2 Mb/s slower than off-peak, but still tons better than last night when it was only 0.25 Mb/s. Upstream is normal as well.

350ms is pretty normal to the US East coast, or some central parts. West coast should usually be under 200ms

Possibly the use of a local VPN might be an option to bypass Orcon for international bandwidth untill they fix their problem.  Or even just use a local VPS eg sitehost to re-route your international traffic.

seeing as this has taken an effing long time to fix I reckon Orcon should be giving it's customers an half off our bills for the same period of time say from (12-Feb-2013) it's only fair that we aren't expected to pay for substandard performance when it was their problem ...... BUT that is wishful thinking and probably wont ever happen because we're just customers

"Under Kordia, Orcon's annual turnover has increased by almost 400 per cent,"

Yeah and we all know why that is now don't we and this

"Bartlett said he believed the sale would lead "to a more sharply focused Kordia".

more like "few thank christ we got rid of that dog now we don't need to deal with the problems".
