GeoffisPure: Has anyone noticed any problems since this new spam filtering came in? I have noticed tonight that emails aren't arriving in my account til 3-4 hours after they are sent.

is orcon employing email delay tactics (greylisting)? delay email from an unknown host (try again later plz kthx bye) - a legit email server will retry a few hours later whereas it's unlikely a spambot will.

ptinson: Which part are you referring to?
Currently we use the settings set by the customer and either mark it as spam or delete it.

If you mean the dropping of spam before it enters the scanners, Orcon has never done that. I have in other places I've worked.

Where is that setting to make messages as SPAM? I use webmail and I can't see that.

Whereabouts in myorcon?  I looked in email settings and found only this:

Free Basic Mailbox10MB storage and free Virus and Spam blocking - including a free LIFETIME yourname@orcon.net.nz email address.<br>[Note: does not support adding your own domain email addresses]

Well that is embarrassing.
Seems we have left that config out of the new version of my orcon.
Its still in the old one I just checked.

I will raise this tomorrow.

Sorry I should have logged into the new one to be sure where it was.

ISP's use _many_ different ways of getting rid of spam in people's email boxes. They don't just let it all thru and run it the spamassassin :-)

I would estimate from an ISP mail server 90% (or total email) these days gets rejected straight away due to various rules which are system wise even before they accept the email and 90% of this email after various other rules is spam as well. What these rules are the ISP will not tell you but they try and get it as good as possible to not cause false positives (thinking email is spam when its not)

As far as I can tell (from external) Orcon's mail system hasn't changed must I implemented it 10 years ago. Yes graylisting works well but for an ISP system it is not a very good thing at all for various reasons and I am sure they are not using it.

Delays in email can usually be identified by looking at the headers of the email.

I would say parts of it are that old. Certainly not all of it.
We are unravelling it at the moment, its changing quite significantly.

You are correct though there is currently no greylisting in the orcon mail platform.
