Not with Orcon, except for P2P shaping all other traffic has the same priority whichever plan the customer is on.

How does Orcon define "P2P"? I had a bad experience with Slingshot shaping SSH (!) down to one megabit because it was "peer to peer". Do Orcon provide a list of protocols that fall into the "P2P" bucket?

SSH isnt one of them thats for sure :-)

Just the usual suspects (Bittorrent, Edonkey etc).

I had a similar experience with Slingshot with a VPN, they told me they didn't do any shaping... the sawtooth doesn't lie.

Just an update on the fibre. Applied to Orcon as discussed and I have an order for install. I live in a retirement complex so I had to get written permission from the Owner (local council) Which I got easily enough. Now the installers are trying to get approval to lay a line form the road to my apartment about 100 m from road. Apparently as its been a couple of weeks proving difficult. Just waiting to hear now

Fibre requires an Ethernet router. Most consumer grade xDSL modems have no ability to support an Ethernet WAN connection, but this is changing.

If you want to use your own router it also needs to support VLAN tagging on the WAN interface (unless your ISP configures an untagged UNNI port), which once again most routers don't support but this is changing.

I may be lucky I have a DGND3700 netgear which i'm sure i read did fibre

yes it is... i have been using exact same router DGND3700 for the last year

edit: but this router did not support vlan tagging

So after i hadnt heard gain from Orcon after three weeks I called them
They would get a member of the Fibre team to call me within 24 hours
true to there word
"We will be sending you some documents to sign so we can proceed with the job."
By email?
no snail mail
???????
That was 3 days ago
Maybe in the mail today?

Snaps no good dont have unlimited and they seem to only go upto 100 a months I usually get through 250 to 350 a month thanks though

I was initially going to go with Orcon UFB -- but, check the pages and pages of complaints about their speeds.

Not much use having a UFB connection if speeds are crippled -- and , for some reason, Orcon seems to suffer from DDOS attacks .

But, Orcon do offer unlimited which is great (albeit the speed)-- Snap offer unlimited between 1am-7am if you have a datapack.

Well where are we 30/10 couple of months later I have received 1 email from Orcon saying congrats your order is placed stand by! Maybe 1 phone cal back saying they were following up. But really nothing I have broadband so life's not to bad, I suppose I should be grateful for that.

The problem as I see it is that Orcon isn't doing the install some other mob is and I am guessing that they are being payed a set install fee
My place is 100metres from where the fibre runs a non straightforward install . Its also owned by the local council all these might be stumbling blocks

I wouldn't know as I don't get a weekly update or a weekly email of progress

I was so looking forward to changing over to what I assumed was a customer focused company .....or i am sure thats what there mission statement would say

Actually maybe I am being a bit unfair after all this is New Zealand.
I should learn relax, chill out ,whats the rush!
It will still be there tomorrow have another beer
Bloody pommies complaing about things where do they think they are Europe or maybe even a America
sheesh give it a rest we will get to it when we get to it....
