VDSL was provisioned today. Chorus guy installed a master splitter and an RJ11 socket for the data line for the new router. Existing BT socket which goes into the voice side of the new splitter is dead since not required with VOIP. Was syncing at about 13/1 for ADSL now 47/10 (down/up) for VDSL.

Now I'm currently with Orcon and Telecom offered to try VDSL at my address even though I'm on the fringe of the local exchange.

Orcon's lookup tool won't give me the option of switching. Do I have to look at moving to Telecom to get VDSL.

Also what about POTs. Is there a VDSL option with POTs still turned on for alarm systems etc?

How important is the wiring part?

Signed up to this last week, tech booked to come today, but had to postpone until tomorrow as he got held up on another job. Come 5.30PM interwebs suddenly stopped working.

Being one not to believe too much in coincidence, I plugged the new Netcomm jobby in, and low and behold, VDSL interwebs now going, albeit slower than I would expect with VDSL.

very imporant. vdsl attenuates faster, and thus its more suspectable to interference.

make sure that tech turns up and does his job, the installation is part of it all.

Like you, I was provisioned with Orcon VDSL this afternoon.
The Chorus tech installed a new VDSL master filter, cat6 cable, and an RJ45 socket.
VDSL was running within minutes of plugging in the NetComm modem/router, with the following underwhelming results:
Orcon speed test: 14Mbps down, 4Mbps up  (was 12 down, 1 up on ADSL)
This result was not completely unexpected, as I am more than 1km away from the local exchange, and before the upgrade I had a download attenuation of 20db on my ADSL modem.
So obviously good home wiring helps, but only if you live in the right place. :)

VDSL is much more sensitive to noise and interference etc. It supposedly adjusts the line so it's the matter of give it the best possible line and leave it alone.

In any case as long as you had less than 12dB attenuation you should see pretty good speed improvement.
