You can certainly control whether the phone uses cellular data from the phone, Apple would have pretty much no idea whether a device is connected via cellular or WiFi when contacting them for a software update AFAIK

A GB is quite a lot of data espeically if everyone is doing it at the same time. Also many people have multiple ios devices, that is multiple of 1GB of data. Compare it to our roading system, you don't build roads to cope with everyone driving on the same road at the same time.

Again, I call rubbish. I can forsee issues at the node (joe user with 5 devices on 1 20Mb VDSL connection) but otherwise - woop dee doo - 1GB. What do you think daily torrent/youtube/netflix throughput is?

I think you are massively underestimating connectivity, or massively overestimating the impact this will have.

Am I also correct in assuming you have to click go to download on non-wifi? In which case time zone will make a difference - unless joe is up at 1AM watching for it (which will happen I know, but not for everyone).

You might call rubbish...

As someone partly responsible for the capacity planning for the largest (I suspect) Akamai nodes in the country, I think _YOU_ are massively underestimating the impact. In fact, I am watching graphs for Akamai right now and it's a LOT busier than usual.

I suspect schools, universities and large offices which have many iDevices or allow BYOD will have smashed internal wireless networks for a day or so.

Maybe Apple should only trickle the downloads to users in small chunks over a week or so to lessen these impacts

Android can, and does allow you to select only Wifi for system updates.

Previously iOS blocked OS and App updates over 50mb over cellular.

Sounds like that has changed?

Monthly MS Windows updates probably have an impact too. There are probably more Windows PC's than IOS devices and these updates can also be quite large.

...and part of the extra load will be all the ios8-ready apps that will be released, 17 overnight for me, and I dont have ios8 installed yet. Interestingly when I tried to install one the App Store didnt respond so it looks like that was stressed.

No doubt many ios device users will have the auto-update feature on for apps too....

The last update that came out I was watching an Akamai Cluster and the traffic increased by about 300% during the update, however due to the speed of New Zealand connections greatly improved over the past 5 years the congested peroid due to the iOS updates only lasted 3 hours. NOTE: this was iOS7 that I'm talking about.

When windows updates come the amount of data downloaded is allot less and is staggered as most PC's are OFF during the default automatic update time.

Well, I did 10 iPads via iTunes ttoday, 1.4gb download, 680ish MB free space required (16MB iPad 2’s) so meh, no biggie really?

I guess it's just the enthusiasm of a "massive" install base wanting it ASAP.

imagine if MS release the next 'good' cycle' version of windows as a free update to whatever minimum spec device level, and spend a couple months with a closed beta group lauding it over the masses.... THAT might cripple the net for a couple days! :D

Helps with App updates, you can't do iOS updates over WiFi though. Also I'm not sure how many people own "orphan" devices, these days, i.e. iPhones/iPads but don't own or use Mac or PC-based iTunes so have to do on-device updates.

The load TBH hasn't been as much as I thought it would be so far. I suspect many devices haven't updated yet due to the large free-space requirement, users either being reluctant to clear space, having no means to easily do so, or having to wait until they have the time to do the update via iTunes on a Mac or PC....

Beside being a "60% increase" in net access in the UK, only 6% -15% have updated so far?

Or, as in my case, wanting to wait for them to sufficiently de-bug it before updating.

Last night we were pushing close to 60mbits out to the wireless network. Usually at about 9.30pm it would be sitting on about 25-30mbits.
This morning at 7am it was still up around 40mbit where it would be lucky to top 10mbit for more than 60 seconds.

Today it has cooled back down.
