Hi All, just a heads up that with the release of ios8 we will no doubt see various parts of the global internet run hot, this update is 900MB+ (ios7 was 700MB I believe from memory), so you can imagine the global load on networks even when caching is being used...this will likely affect traffic levels over the next 24-48hrs...

Regards FireEngine

Fair point... I'm watching the links we're serving it across and there's currently _STACKS_ of capacity spare... If someone wanted to be sure they got it as quick as possible, grab it now, before the evening rush!

Cheers - N

Who would download over mobile though, it would cost a bucketload on most plans. People are better to download over wifi. Mine downloaded and installed over wifi and it was complete in about 60 minutes.

There is a story on NZ Herald

"iOS 8 requires at least 5.7GB of free space to be installed on most iPhone and iPad models, according to the Global News. Previous iOS updates only needed about 1GB of free space."

That can't be right ??????

So I don't need that much space if I do it through itunes?
Wife will freak out if I ask her to clear that much space off her 16gb mini

My understanding is no.  The space is needed to action the update, just working space.  If you use iTunes the computer does most of that instead.

I had to restore from iTunes because my phone was jailbroken. I'm trying to restore my iCloud backup onto my 5s now, it says 6 hours remaining. In the past this has taken 20mins. I can't even get into the phone while it's restoring...

How much of that is down to Akamai/Apple servers etc being overloaded,  vs stuff within your control?

This is why I abandoned my attempt at OTA update this morning...

Will do via iTunes this evening and see how we go.

Although it needs about 5GB of free space to install, once installed you will have a lot of free diskspace left, about 4GB. This is one reason I wouldn't buy a 16GB iphone 6, as you first have to delete stuff to do an ios update which isn't good.

Problem:  IOS 8 requires 1.1GB to be downloaded over wifi only.  Spark free wifi offers 1GB per day...

I *Could* use my home broadband connection but since its a work phone - no.

16gb is getting really frustrating now 32gb should be the minimum.
Spread the word, don't get a 16gb ipad, iphone or ipod
