gi99a: I agree....

If Sligshot aint throttling or planning to, where did that Stuff artical come from? .

You would find that it is either made up, or more likely an article that was written by 'it that knows all'... Google, and had one day been a discussion in a forum long ago cached by google.

No doubt TOM PULLAR-STRECKER did not investigate the claim, or talk to those in the article. Toms article would no doubt have be due at the dominion post, and so he cut and paste information together and posted it. It is a shame these days that news articles are so inacurate, and so very badly researched if it all.
Another terrible 'journalist' is Juha Saarinen he also either makes things up, or reports forum postings as true newsworthy articles without any research or investiagation into the claims he makes.

I would have thought that the news papers, or media would have some responsibilty to at least try and make sure their articles contain some truth, but I guess those days are over long ago.

The worst thing is that these articles then get published on multiple forums or websites and the whole lie snowballs, and causes nothing but confusion, and concern over nothing.
The concerning thing is that these articles effect the company that they are written about, and
TOM PULLAR-STRECKER, Juha Saarinen or any other 'journalist' of their skills continue to do this, and the public will continue to believe what they read.

Its something thats being going on for a long time, typically against the bigger players... but I agree - IT/telco articles need people who factcheck and understand the technology.

Though some of the smaller players probably didn't mind some of the misinformation published in the past...

I find Juha a good read and on the whole very informative.

Ditto. I personally know Juha and he's a tech journalist who "gets it".

I have to agree, he is no doubt one of the better copy/paste journalists out there, its just a shame his articles are not researched at all, and they contain mis-information, instead of actual facts. He obviously uses web forums significantly as that is no doubt where he gets his 'researched' facts for his articles. Copy/Paste is king!

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

This is going very off topic. But I can tell you Juha is not this kind of journalist. He actually knows what he's talking about and does test and research stuff. I think you are very wrong there.

Perhaps you could open another discussion and post there links to articles he wrote that you can see as copy and paste?

Actually I dare you to do that instead of posting this here.

Oooh... ears getting warm!

Wouldn't it be easy if one could get away with copying and pasting, not to mention making things up.

Fortunately you can't as a journalist, however.

The rules are different for an anonymous coward posting online, but either way, the trolling is off-topic.

Good morning.

I don't want to get too involved in this interesting debate, other than to say that the story was entirely accurate. An industry source told me that CallPlus had purchased Cisco equipment that will let it throttle P2P trafic, which is what we reported.

I called CallPlus chief executive Martin Wylie for comment and included his comments in full in the story - I also advised him verbally of the thrust of what the story would say before it was published.

Mr Wylie did not raise any concerns then and CallPlus have not contacted me since to raise any concerns in relation to the story.

will let them throttle...

whether or not they do is another story - from the looks of things only a few users have issues with p2p

Slingshot consipracy against these individual people?

I think not - my flatties went through 60GB+ in p2p last month

The other issue is how old the news is - Slingshot has had the equipment for over a year now... wouldnt you think this issue would have been raised earlier?

So,

1. The actual facts were old - almost a year

2. If Slingshot was going to trottle p2p wouldnt they do it at a network level?! Not target individuals - an incredibly stupid thing to do from a marketing and PR perspective

3. If you read the article closely, Martin Wylie did not admit throttle p2p nor was it stated that CallPlus/Slingshot actually do it. They simply have the ability thanks to the Cisco equipment - I assure you it wouldn't have been purchased for that very reason.

4. Innocent till proven guilty?!

see my scepticism..

I'm sorry, but that's just splitting hairs. Tom did what a good journo does, and gave Wylie the opportunity to explain what is going on. If Callplus isn't going to do it, why didn't Wylie say so? Why does Callplus spend money on Cisco gear that can do traffic management at that level if they're not going to use it?

Whether or not your Internet traffic is managed is important to people - see the Go Large fiasco.

Totally understand, but the point is just because they have the ability doesnt mean it's being used.

Cisco gear does 101 more things than just p2p shaping - can provide BOT detection for example

As an owner of Slingshot, let me give you my perspective: 1.       We are not blocking or restricting or even viewing any content. As far as I am concerned, we have no position on what our customers are doing as we are really just the conduit in a similar manner to phone companies who do not try and control what people say over their phone lines.  However we will always obey any laws where they apply to our business.2.       We do not restrict traffic such as peer-to-peer traffic.  As suggested by one respondent, that would be illogical as we charge for additional data blocks.

3.       We do prioritise traffic so that the customer gets the best possible internet experience, and have indeed purchased some heavy-duty hardware to help us do this.  For example, voip traffic on our iTalk service is highly prioritised over other traffic, as voice traffic simply won’t work well unless we do this.  Similarly web page displays are given a higher priority than peer-to-peer downloads if necessary, so that customers running this sort of traffic can still surf the net at good speeds while downloads are happening in the background. To clarify, peer-to-peer is never blocked.

4.       We purchase sufficient international bandwidth to provide an equal or higher user:bandwidth ratio than that provided to us over the local DSL network, so that international bandwidth is not a bottleneck.5.       We will probably introduce a low off-peak data block rate soon, as it does not make any sense for us to have international capacity sitting there unused.  Our aim is to continue to value-add, which to us means ‘doing more for less’.

 Regards Mal
