I'm on the Takapuna exchange and my Purple+ connection has been down since 11am on Saturday morning. I've tried a second modem and that also gives me the solid red Internet light so it's not my equipment at least. I've called Orcon twice and they said they don't know why it has stopped working.

You always take it for granted that it's there until it goes down then realise how dependent you are on it!

Went down again this morning - no Internet for about 2 hours on a Monday morning. Grr. Fortunately I can use my 3G phone for email when this happens, but it costs.

Off to check out Telecom and Telstra... Speed is nice, but reliability is far more important when you work from home!

Well no sooner had I sent forth an email about how good it had been, back came the old problem with loss of PPP, but dsl still up. (On Orcons Dynalink RTA1320's the PPP led is out, DSL LED still green), and for about 2 hrs also w2krules. Which makes me believe a lot more users lost their connection as well, some not using it as they are at work etc , others just not knowing whats wrong or how to highlight the issue. I hope on Sunday morning they didn't have to put the old card back in using it as the engineering spare.........

w2krules, did your connection die at 10:04:01 and restart at 11:03:01, thats what I got out of the connections info off the LLU page for my connections on orcons account page. Be interesting to see if you dropped at the same time.

Yes, mine went down then and I got PPP back soon after 11. But no Internet until I forced a port reset by disconnecting the line for 10 minutes just before midday.

It was a widespread problem - the Helpdesk person that I spoke to said that it was the 4th call he'd received. And from his comments, it sounds as though they don't look into problems until they receive fault reports, so I'd suggest that we jump on the phone as soon as something goes wrong next time.

But I really have had enough. I was on Telecom Wholesale with Orcon for 14 months before they changed me to their LLU network, and NEVER had to phone them. And my previous 12 months with Telstra Clear were exactly the same - never had a problem.

I have the exact same issue!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a Linksys AM300 modem and my Internet light is solid red but my DSL light is solid green.

I also tried the same modem you mentioned with the exact same result as you - DSL light green but no PPP light. This can't be a coincidence.

Yep told them this when it first went down. I'll have to wait and see what happens I guess.

Will post when I have an outcome, but I have a very simlar issse with part of my connection dropping and re-connecting under load. I'm connected to Te Atatu exchange.

Got home last night and read through the thread, checked Orcon usage page and sure enough I had lost PPP from 10:03am to 11:03am yesterday morning.

The issue experienced by customers on the Onehunga exchange can happen regardless of load. My connection was basically idle but still lost PPP (but not DSL). Does your connection drop PPP but maintain DSL, and does the issue persist after a reboot of the device with the PPP connection returning at some later time without further intervention? If the issue you are seeing only occurs during times of high load (i.e. heavy torrenting with a large number of peers) then it could possibly be that the NAT tables on your DSL router are overloaded due to limited memory resources, resulting in an unresponsive unit. If you power cycle your router and it comes right straight away then it's probably just an overloaded router.

Mine is now working again.

I got a phone call from Orcon this afternoon (left a message on my phone) which said they had done a card reset(?) and everything should be working.

Got home and it was, so hopefully that's the last of that!

Hi everyone!

Sorry to jump in on your thread, but I have the exact (or freakishly similar) problem that you guys do. I'm connected to the (New Lynn or Titirangi?) exchange about 20 metres from where I am sitting right now. I have tried 2 routers, the D-Link DSL-502T and the Belkin F5D5730au, on my new Purple+ plan (barely been active for 24 hours, over 70 drop-outs), I've had about 3 visits from the same chorus techie.

This is starting to get REALLY annoying. Besides asking the technicians to switch me to an alternative brand of DSLAM, which I have already done (and is being processed tomorrow), what might I be able to do to get a solid (or even remotely solid) connection going.
Short of Blasting into the exchange, I'm out of ideas.

TO BE NOTED: About 4 seconds after I posted this, it dropped out. Completely. Not even a hint of data now! Both styles of reseting do nothing, NOTHING! ARGH!

Thanks pronosis. It's pretty clear now that this type of problem affects a fair number of Orcon subscribers.

Is it a new DSL connection, or was it working OK before?

Have any of you tried the HomeHub?

My DrayTek was dropping every day or so, sometimes more frequently, and I suspected the DrayTek was faulty. Swapped to the HomeHub and it is a huge improvement.

Sure it's $5 / month but when Orcon do more good stuff it'll be ready to take it.

One good reason not to ? You'll get arrested for trespassing on private property. Property that has pretty tight security in the first place. LLU does not mean the public has the right to storm and destroy telephone exchanges you know that's just silly :D

What stats are you getting from your router ? You can get a line check down to say what stats you should be getting.

What were the results of the chorus techie ? Are you getting charged for those visits ??? Do you have a monitored alarm ?

For me the most reliable ADSL router I've had so far is a Dynalink 1025w - I've heard reports that D-Links are crap . You might want to consider replacing your modem router.
