Sounddude: Hi Guys

Just to let you know that I have been reading the forums and noting the problems thats are being experienced, and we are working hard to look into it. Youtube is one of the sites we want to run perfectly for you.

Have some projects on the go which should help. Will let you know more soon :)

I sure hope it's VERY soon. Interestingly, things were fantastic after cabinetisation here in Mairangi Bay a few months ago, then a while later, Youtube became pretty much unusable, and remains that way, which is a serious deal breaker here. General download speeds elsewhere are fantastic. What's gone wrong Orcon? How hard can it be to fix this? If you had a bandwidth problem, why would this only affect Youtube? Time frame please,  I can't put up with this for much longer.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

working on it is one thing.. but a time frame is another.

I've taken to downloading Youtube videos at 7am so I can watch them at night when I get home from work. Finally got a slow speed ticket organised as well for Orcon, but I'm glad that I am not the only one with issues

Orcon's speed has been crap since early june, I waited for 4 weeks for the speed to increase, back then they said they were "purchasing extra international capacity" but it never seemed to improve, so I changed to Telecom, Telecom has been sweet since day one, and I'm now on month 3 with them and its... just the way the internet was supposed to be.. Orcon must be loosing customers left right and centre with performance similar or even worse to slingshot...

Have started having issues with youtube.. 5 minute clips taking 10-20 minutes to buffer... whats going on Orcon.
Was fast no matter what time of the day not so long ago, not enough bandwidth? I've also noticed some facebook applications also are becoming impossible to use/play.
I know it's not facebook or the applications as they work fine at work ;-) (shhhh!) and on a Telecom connection.
Combine this with the 50% increase in costs and I think it might be time to move again :-( A shame as I like the purple :-)

I wonder if the problem is related to LinkedIn also not working for some people on Orcon. I can't use it at home at all.

Something has changed recently, downside there isnt really another option for an ISP other than Telecom. :-/

When an ISP has traffic shapers they live in a false belief that they can create something out of nothing, the growth in streaming content is the problem, more international will help, but caching the streaming content will reap better results overall, i hear Peerapp have an ideal solution.

Would like Orcon to get this and UBA contention issues resolved soon. Duncan are you listening or too busy with the wine and beer and the naked (DSL) parties?

What happened? Things are suddenly faster, and not because of anything at my end!

Youtube is almost unuseable on orcon.

I tested with somebody else using telecom that i was talking to on the phone.
We clicked the video at the same time and he could watch the whole video without it pausing whereas mine stopped many times.

I have full speed up and down and get up to a mbit/sec downloading at off peak times.

This is interesting - it shows the variability of performance across Orcon connections, whether UBA or LLU. As of a moment ago, Youtube was absolutely usable and our ping to the Auckland server on speedtest was 10mbps/0.8mbps. At one time it was 12/1, but for some reason that disappeared.

I have a UBA connection. After we were cabinetised, the LLU connection was worse than ISDN (remember that?) speed. Orcon blamed Telecom (Chorus). Chorus blamed Orcon. I was the meat in the sandwich.

So Orcon moved me back to UBA, all that cleared up. For a while.

Then came the patchy bandwidth. Then the "good when the kiddies were at school" syndrome.

Now it's improved, suddenly. And I have no clue why

It's something that Orcon have done, or Telecom, or both.

What is it Orcon? Why the extreme variability of the connection performance?

And how slow is too slow before a connection becomes unreasonably slow, and refunds are due?

Well?

Here is an email that I recieved back from my complaint/fault log with Orcon (Orcon+ line)

Hope this helps you guys out a bit.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your email regarding your YouTube speed. From what I understand we have recently installed some new network equipment to try and fix this issue. This has been installed within the last two days and will need some time to be fully integrated and be up to full potential. If you try YouTube again in a week or so hopefully things would have picked up.

If you are still experiencing this issue after that then please feel free to contact me or one of our other helpdesk members on the number below, or alternatively reply to this email.

Warm Regards,

***** *******

Just speaking for myself here (don't know about anybody else) - my connection has speeded up across the board - not just youtube.
