DjShadow: I raised an eyebrow when I saw the Mangawhai bit also, my aunt has a place at mangawhai heads and the only way to get a VF signal was to stand outside and get a 1-2 bar signal from leigh

tell your aunt to report the issue to vodafone. don't know if vodafone will do anything but hey it's worth a try.

This is not a fault its just where the house is located its very poor in building coverage

Yeah, living in the 3% can suck.

I do also think it's slightly hypocritical of the company to focus on cheaper on-net pricing when they've come out to strongly against this in the past and even gone as far as suggesting it should be outlawed as it's anti competitive.

+1.

It seems ridiculous that they attack Telecom and Voda for differenciating between on and offnet (depite XT actually being same rate for all networks for voice,  and despite both providers charging the same standard rate for on and offnet txts)
....and then to come out with rates where off-net prices are double the on-net rate,  and off-net txts are more than 3 times the rate of on-net txts.

Yes they are considerably cheaper,  which is great, but also besides the point.  They bashed others for complex "anticompetitive" pricing,  and they are doing the exact same thing themselves, an an even bigger scale than the other providers do it.

Whether you were partly responsible or not, the Herald article totally misrepresents the on-net TXT offer!!

Can you please clarify!

Is the 22c/min rate for on-net calls to 2D mobiles and to landlines PERMANENT, or only within 30 days of topping up (ie. status quo)?

If the status quo remains, then the Herald is making much ado about nothing - essentially the only change I see is that on-net TXTs after 100 are only charged at 2c instead of 9c, and this hardly sets the world on fire like the Herald articles suggests!!

Unfortunately we can't do much about the fourth-estate.

There is no change to the 22cent rate which is for calling to 2degree mobiles and landlines.

To answer your questions: The 2cent text rate is available to customers everytime they top-up their account and (like all the other specials on top -up like: the free text bundles and the 22c rate) is valid for 30-days.

Is the 2cent text rate permanently available, yes it's permanently set at 2cents for text to 2degrees mobiles onced you've gone through your free text bundles when customers top-up.

Thanks

so is it permanent or valid for 30 days?  you contradict yourself.

Hello 'Da Vinci code' pricing!

Screeb:
From reading more of what 2degrees has said it seems that it's been mis-reported in the news. It seems that it's only a magic top-up thing - and the 22c/min 2d-2d calls thing is no different from current. So in other words, the ONLY change is that after your free magic top-up txts are used, your 2d-2d txt rate is 2c/txt for the rest of the magic period, after which it goes back to 9c/txt. Can't complain about that, but it hasn't been communicated very well.

You've got it. Except 22cent calls is not only to 2degrees mobiles, but also to landlines and we've added some mobile rates to other countries in this 22cent rate as well.

Cheers

I don't really think the on-net and off-net differentiation is really on a bigger scale though. It looks like it's really just an extension of the Magic Top, which has free text bundles for any network, and for voice calls, the 22c/min includes landlines and a few selected other countries too.

Vodafone probably has the most with BestMates, TXT2000, Family, etc, and Telecom is around the same with 2degrees. I think 2degrees tries to even the national/international pricing more a bit more, though.

To me, the 2c/txt doesn't really make much of a difference re: texting because it's a difference of 4c and only after I finish the free text bundles (which I usually don't, and sometimes doesn't count anyway since I send a fair bit of international texts), I'm more impressed by the voice pricing.

1) It's hard to be anti-competitive if you are a bit player in the market.  One could almost say they have to provide these deals in order to compete with the unfair deals on other networks.

2) The difference between 2degrees on-net and off-net deals might be 2-3x, but the difference between Vodafones on-net and off-net deals are anywhere between 40x (TXT2000) and almost infinitely cheaper (best mates).

This is an absurd position to take.  They are in business to make a profit, not as some altruistic act to force the NZ market to a level playing field in terms of on-net/off-net.  You can only hold out so long ... if the market refuses to move then you have to meet the market or face the consequences.

The pricing of calls and texts is not beside the point.  Where would we be if they had not cut the prices since launch?  From reading this thread it seems like Vodafone are already preparing a response.  If you're a Vodafone customer, say a little thank-you to 2d for that.

When they eventually launch on-account and data plans, I am picking they turn the screws on Vf and Telecom on pricing then too ...

If you can't beat them, Join em!

I foresee really good on-net pricing for plans; when they do arrive!

I have no problem with them introducing these kind of plans in principle.  The problem stems from the fact that they promised to make things simpler and not differentiate between on and off net.

They have broken their promise.
In fact they have introduced a new layer of complexity by having pricing that changes 30 days ofter topup. AFAIK no other carrier has a tariff where the price changes a certain amount of time after you top up.

The pricing of calls and texts is not beside the point.

it is besides the point.

when they launched they attacked other providers for being
a) expensive
b) complex
c) having different pricing on and off-net

and said they were going to change all three.
They have done a), making things cheaper,  which is great.  But they have actually gone backwards on b) and c) since launch, which is not so great.
The fact that they have reduced pricing is incidental to the point that they have made their pricing more complex and differentiated strongly between on and off-net when they said they would not.

When you attack someone for doing x, going so far as to say that x should be illegal, and then go and do the exact same thing yourself, then that is known as being a hypocrit.

It is the same pricniple as when a 'family values' politician is found to use prostitutes.  I have no problem with people using prostitutes. But when someone actively speaks out against prsotituton, and is then found to be using them himself,  then that is being a hypocrit.

Which is my point. They billed themselves as the saviour of NZ comms, and then when push comes to shove, they jump on the on-net band wagon.

But downwward forces on prices is good for everyone!
