From 31 March:

Calls to to 2degrees mobiles and landlines drops to 22c/min
Texts to other 2degrees mobiles drops to 2c/text
Calls to Vodafone/Telecom mobile stay at 44c and texts 9c

I assume all the other pricing stays the same

Remember the 2c option is "ON-NET", aka taking a leaf out of Vodafone's book

I would hope so, if you stick with the point of view of base charging which vodafone keeps avoiding....22c vs 89c for calls to landlines is a huge difference now.
All they need to do now is bring in some Data Plans and maybe some text bundles

This is going off topic here - the comparison that the NZ Herald did was a bit poor.

* They didn't factor in any of the magic top ups that you get, when you top up your 2 degrees mobile.
* They picked up the casual text plan rate and the 150sms bundle from Telecom, but failed to list other text plans such as $10 text (CDMA) or the $12 unlimited SMS option.
* They excluded any data pricing, which is significantly cheaper on Telecom(XT) or Vodafone.

Excluding the dubious quotes about coverage, the above suggests limited research was performed when writing this article. Given the above points, took only a few minutes to find - I was disappointed.

Isn't $10 CDMA TXT dead?

And Magic Topups are subject to change at any time. Will be interesting to know if it changes at all (cheaper call rate are negated by the price revision, hope the free TXTs don't disappear - unlikely I guess given they recently improved the TXT Magic?).

And I don't think leaving out the data comparison is "unfair".

The article starts with: "New mobile phone operator 2Degrees is to slash the cost of texting and calling over its network.". To be fair, many non-Geeks don't use data at all and couldn't care less. And 2 Degrees has made no apologies for focussing on voice and txting for the mean time.

Edit: Just noticed what might be a tiny "hook"?

Chief brand and marketing officer Larrie Moore said the new rates would kick in for their more than 200,000 customers when they next topped up their phones.

Topup required to activate?

I had to laugh at the guy who switched to 2degrees because the Vodafone coverage was poor at Mangawhai - he's obviously totally unaware he's roaming on the Vodafone network!

I applaud 2degrees for the move and think it's fantastic that they are being an aggressive player in the marketplace. It's just a shame that they continute to bleat about the "broken" regulatory environment here in NZ when it seems they are doing far, far better than they ever imagined possible.

I do also think it's slightly hypocritical of the company to focus on cheaper on-net pricing when they've come out to strongly against this in the past and even gone as far as suggesting it should be outlawed as it's anti competitive.

I raised an eyebrow when I saw the Mangawhai bit also, my aunt has a place at mangawhai heads and the only way to get a VF signal was to stand outside and get a 1-2 bar signal from leigh

cokemaster: Telecoms $10 text for CDMA is not dead (see http://telecom.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/114/r_id/166/search/1/kw/%2410%20text ) .

Cheers for that. I thought there was all sorts of panic about the end of $10 TXT recently and thought it was being used as a way to push users onto XT.

Hi all,

The 2c text rate is something that automatically kicks in on top-up from Wed 31 March.
So when you top-up your account you not only get the free text bundles (which go up in quantity based on the different top-up amounts), the 22cent calling rate but you now also get the 2c text rate from 2degrees to 2degrees. The 2cent text rate is valid for 30-days just like the other rates etc mentioned.
If you're a customer and you've topped-up within the last 30-days you'll automatically switch onto the 2c rate which will last through to your current top-up expiry.

Cheers!
