ronw: Wonder when the rest of Auckland are going to get access to Fibre. I have two fibres outside my house Chorus and Vector but when I check with orcons page it just says Fibre will be available for your address is available but your address has not been confirmed yet?
Seems so long to get access when the cable is in the ground

The GPON fibre access network being built is not the same thing as existing point to point fibre.

booGz: Oh well, looks like im off to buy a Cisco SRP521W then :D

Or just use the Genius :)

Well I _could_ do that, but after disabling a whole bunch of stuff on the genius last night the performance boost was quite significant... Was able to push through close to 60mbit downstream... Plus I have a site - site vpn between my home network and a system hosted at HD's data centre and I wouldnt mind offloading that to the router

Can anyone confirm how the router gets its IP address on Orcon UFB?
Is the router set to static IP? DHCP? PPPoE?

And people need to remember that UFB is a 10yr project, with the focus in the first 5 years being commercial and education/health. Residential is NOT the focus in the first 5 years, and most residential users won't be installed until after year 5.

If you have existing Chorus fibre you can get a P2P connection and will pay exactly the same as a a UFB P2P connection.

Not true at all. While Commercial areas are being built first there are extensive residential areas in years 1 and 2 of the roll out (in Auckland anyway)

I know the build out, which is why I made by comment. I didn't say residential users won't get fibre, I said that they aren't the focus. The vast majority of residential homes in NZ won't get fibre for 5+ years.

You guys have got me sitting on the edge here. I'm in Albany, with confirmed fibre access right outside my door. Decisions, decisions ...

Having been with Telecom on Xtra since like forever, I'm hesitant to change though. My odd foray into other ISP's have had mixed results over the years and although not the greatest, Xtra has been the most consistent.

A couple of questions, if anyone has spare time and feel interested in responding:
  • Is it possible to get Orcon while remaining with Telecom for voice, i.e. get Orcon internet only?
  • I use a Juniper SSG20 as my primary firewall. Any idea where I can get confirmation on what the requirements are for an Orcon fibre connection, from a firewall perspective?

Thanks in advance. Any responses appreciated.

Your copper isn't disconnected or removed when fibre is installed, so maintaining a PSTN connection from Telecom along with a fibre connection is fine.

ISP's need a VoIP offering to launch fibre services, so it's probably we will see some ISP's late to market.

Really? Seems a bit bizzare. Do they require that ufb isps also offer email and other services too?

I'm not meaning that there is a legal requirement - merely that many people still want voice connections, and if they don't have a VoIP offering then they're not going to be able to offer voice.
