Like you, I was provisioned with Orcon VDSL this afternoon.
The Chorus tech installed a new VDSL master filter, cat6 cable, and an RJ45 socket.
VDSL was running within minutes of plugging in the NetComm modem/router, with the following underwhelming results:
Orcon speed test: 14Mbps down, 4Mbps up (was 12 down, 1 up on ADSL)
This result was not completely unexpected, as I am more than 1km away from the local exchange, and before the upgrade I had a download attenuation of 20db on my ADSL modem.
So obviously good home wiring helps, but only if you live in the right place. :)

With stats like that I'd have to seriously think about it being worth the extra cost my speed went up by 2.5x so worth the extra $30 a month but 2down/3up if I had that happen i'd just go back to ADSL

Orcon's lookup tool won't give me the option of switching. Do I have to look at moving to Telecom to get VDSL.

Also what about POTs. Is there a VDSL option with POTs still turned on for alarm systems etc?

14db, would probably put your on the borderline. if by cat5e from the demeric you mean only a single run to your modem, that is essentially the same as a splitter (one will need to be installed for chorus to be *happy* though generally.)

ild probably guess at late 20s early 30s for that distance, depending of quality of the copper in your area it may deteriorate speed faster or slower than expected.

So I just got VDSL at my place. I live in an apartment block in the city(Auckland) outside the fringes of the UFB zones. Chorus guy calls and comes to my place, he doesn't install a splitter because he said there is nothing to split and told me I am on the fringes in terms of distance to exchange (~900m). VDSL was up and kicking in and my down speed sync had reduced from 18K to 14-15K and Up speed sync from 1K to 2K. I told the Chorus guy and he was like yea sorry can't do much about it etc etc.

I called up Orcon and told them of this, and asked could I be changed back to ADSL as I was off contract and would be paying $20 less. The rep told me they had to keep me on for about a week for it to settle and if it was worse they would 'automatically' switch me over. But if I had wanted to go to ADSL then and there I would have to pay the early termination fee. I opted to wait and the speed has stayed the same.

Just wanted to share my experience with ya'all.

How long should it take for VDSL to be setup on Orcons end after Chorus tech has been and gone?

Chorus tech left about 20-30mins ago, the line is synching 44/10 but I can't connect, reading through this thread everyone seemed to connect straight away when the tech was finished
I haven't recieved any txts/emails from Orcon yet, I assume they are busy. Thought I would ask just in case

theres a period that the ISP cant touch persay, the line.

this is normally until they get "service given" notifications. often an isp wont want to touch vdsl until after DLM does its 10 day training period, which tries to get your line to the "best" stats it can.

@phewsion, that sounds like orcons side not being setup or your line wasnt jumpered correctly, clearly up till the DSLAM atlest, you do have a VDSL connection.

yep, sounds like orcon were simply waiting on "service given" to be announced (techs dont do it right after a job like one would expect often..) before they "activated" their side.

10 days later ...
After 10 days of DLM provisioning/training, my stats were no better, with VDSL speeds remaining below 15/5, and with high downstream attenuation (24dB).
This was despite a text-book Chorus install with new VDSL master filter, Cat6 cable , RJ45 socket, and Netcomm modem/router - plus a new drop link to my house a few months ago.
I contacted Orcon who agreed to roll me back to ADSL without penalty.
As of this morning I am running on Orcon ADSL2+ again, with the same ADSL speeds that I had before the “upgrade”.
Geek bonus - because I have returned my old "black" Genius modem (ADSL only), I get to use the new "white" Genius modem, which works well with both ADSL and VDSL.
As I see it, the problem is old legacy copper wiring beyond my house, and is in no way the ISP's fault.

Hey guys

Sorry for the dumb question but I'm not clued on on VDSL. After some effort I found these settings. Can I expect a reasonable upgrade? I'm currently getting about 1.4 megs per second downloads

for 9db atteuation, your download speed looks a little slow, i suspect no central filter. (one will be installed as part of the vdsl installation)

ild expect you to be about 20~35mbit downstream. (2.5~4.3MB/s around about.)

I had my VDSL installed last week. I've gone from 12ish Mbps down and about 800Kbps up, to 63Mbps down and 10Mbps up.

I'm loving it.
