It's an ancient issue. It's the same problem that happened with companies selling applications and hardware which could copy copy-protected commercial software back in the days of the Apple ][ and Commodore 64. The company making it can claim all they like that they are "just providing a service" and "what the customer does is not in our control" ... but it's a load of garbage by greedy people who simply want to make money and don't care about the consequences. They're also usually the first people who would start jumping up and down when someone else copies their stuff.

No doubt there are idiots in companies that make guns claiming "we didn't know people would use them to kill things". :-\

Thats the same as saying that if a drunk crashes a car and kills someone the car manufacturer is culpable, or if a Dictator uses a F16 to drop chemical weapons General Dynamics is culpable.

On this point I cant see the difference between the accusations against Megaupload and the US Postal Service. USPS will quite happily ship, for example, counterfeit branded jeans around and by doing so facilitate the counterfeit jeans trade....

Both would be equally wrong of course but stones and glass houses etc....

The US Postal Service doesn't "induce" people to commit the crimes.

By offering payment per 1000 downloads you are attracting attention of people who want to earn online. They see the "per 1000" and realise that cute photos of their kitten just aren't going to cut it so look for files that thousands of people will want to download - that they have no right to those files doesn't seem to matter. They then go around forums like this one and drop links to their downloads - and usually end up being banned for spamming.

It's a sad fact of life that there are millions of people who are willing to work hard for small rewards and turn a blind eye to legalities. They will be attracted to any website offering a way of earning. File Sharing sites that pay per download entrap those individuals.

On a side note - it appears that internet access has just boomed in Bangladesh. Another forum I belong to has had an upsurge in unsophisticated spammers from that country. These guys are fair game to people like KDC because every scheme is a new and exciting opportunity. People from countries with more established user bases like Pakistan are less likely to fall for such obvious bait.

He stated that mega upload only paid if the files are under 100 or 200mb. A movie is a lot bigger than that.

That limit is why forums had limits on file size and jdownloader exists.

I groaned when Orcon tried to surf the great wave of Dotcom B.S. Maybe that's coming back to haunt them?

Kiwi's need to wise up. Dotcom has been playing people like a fiddle. He is certainly no angel.

He makes grandiose promise after grandiose promise simply to grab head lines. 2 weeks later people forget what he said.

Dotcom and Hone Hawarira are perfect bedfellows: they both play check-book politics, they're both a bit dodgy, they're both in it for glory and personal gain, they both fool some of the people - all of the time, they've both been on the wrong side of the law, and despite both of them having really dodgy backgrounds, neither have had to account for what they have said or done to date, and finally N.Z. is the only country in the western world, politically naive enough to tolerated the thought of both of them in politics.

I don't think Hone is silly enough to hook up with Dotcom though. I am surprised he is silly enough to be seen talking to Dotcom.
