Orcon wraps up successful Kim Dotcom campaign

Orcon today announced its successful campaign featuring Kim Dotcom is coming to an end, as the internet mogul focuses on his political aspirations.

Six months ago, Kim Dotcom was selected to front the Orcon campaign highlighting New Zealand’s restrictive data caps, in what has been the company’s most successful campaign to date.

“Our clear position to bring First World Internet to New Zealand has really resonated with New Zealanders and we’ve seen very strong results for the business,” says Greg McAlister, CEO Orcon.

“Over 70 per cent of our sales are now for an unlimited plan, with customers taking it up primarily to avoid bill shock and to stop squabbles in the flat or home about excess usage. Ultra-fast-broadband (UFB) has also taken off. We’ve now got more UFB connections than any other telco.”

McAlister explains that Kim Dotcom was chosen as talent for the campaign not only because he is a valued Orcon customer, but because he shares Orcon’s belief that uncapped broadband should be accessible to all Kiwis.

“While Kim Dotcom isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, he’s helped bring the topic of unlimited broadband to the forefront. There’s no doubt he gets attention and you can’t argue his passion for the internet. The fact he loves Orcon’s service helped too.

“The campaign has worked its socks off for us but now Kim Dotcom’s involvement with the Internet Party means we’ll risk running foul of New Zealand Electoral laws if we continue to use him to front our campaign.

“It’s time for us to bid farewell and move to the next phase of our campaign to champion unlimited broadband,” says McAlister.

IMO a good time for Orcon to sever ties too.

I get the feeling (my opinion only) that finally the NZ public is starting to see through the KDC hype and hyberbole.

Yep, it was a silly mangement idea* using him in the first place. Mind you, the next one could be equally as bad ... they might choose Paul Henry! :-O

I don't mind Henry and his new show is quite good, although he does seem to mention dot com almost every night.

I hated those Orcon ads, so it is a good thing they are going, although I skip ads, only watched it to see what it was about.

He is probably the best interviewer on TV. He does sometimes get a bit ranty though.

Love how this thread has turned into something about Paul Henry haha.

Last week Dotcoms Bodyguard/right hand man (His name escapes me right now) was going to appear on TPHS but Dotcom got the lawyers involved to stop him from talking.

I quite liked KDC just from what I saw on TV/his personality however now it sounds like he is hiding something (Although he probably was all along!!)

Who you calling a Spade?

Gardening jokes aside, I used to think the Dotcom raid was nothing more than US corporate interests dictating to their political lackies to go after an easy target, actually I still do, but since Dotcom has got into politics, the Yanks can send him to Guantanamo for all I care.

Possibly its that Kiwi distain for politicians that has seen his popularity slip.

Paul Henry shouldn't even be on the planet ... mind you, most of the time he seems to be on a different planet. :-\

To me the campaign was somewhat contradictory. They implied  having caps on plans are third world, yet they do sell plans with caps on them. Sure they also had a plan without caps, but the rest didn't. If they are saying their service is 1st world, then all the plans shouldn't have caps, otherwise the are saying that some of their plans are third world. At least that is my logic to it. Glad it is gone.

I think the logic was "not having an uncapped choice, is 3rd world"
