2degrees can put clauses in their terms and conditions to try to stop it but the way I see it once you have bought a number it is your number and you are free to do with it what you like, within the legal system (terms and conditions do not constitute a law). In the same way you can do what you like with anything else you buy like a car. 2degrees don't like it because it's an opportunity to make extra cash that they missed out on.

I think there is a slightly grey area where fans can't get tickets to concerts or sporting events because other people buy all the tickets in large quantities and then try to sell them on for inflated prices that the fans who weren't first in the queue now have to buy if they want to go. That is a different situation because people are clearly losing out.

2degrees lose nothing by allowing the resale of their numbers, it's not against the law it's just selling on something you have bought.

Why not let them do it? if people are willing to pay why not let them? if they aren't willing to pay the market will go...

I have emailed 2D with these questions:

1 Could you please explain why it's ok for 2D to put a raft of desirable numbers on the (TradeMe) market but prevent everyone else from doing so? Whether or not the proceeeds go to charity is neither here nore there; the fact is that you trade numbers on TradeMe but now want to prevent others from doing so.

2 Where in your terms and conditions does it specifically exclude SIMs and Numbers from being traded other than on the page where you have the option of changing your number? I expect that many people who already have a number that may have some market value attached to it will not have even have had the need to go on to the 'change your number' page.

3 Do you intend to cancel the SIMs of those numbers already traded (other than your own of course, if you apply your double standard)?

What is their interest interest in what people choose to do with their number?

they can set the rules but they have to follow them to and they can't change them after you've bought your sim!

Ahmad: Fine if those are the rules when I buy the card. The fact is they have introduced those rules in the last day or so after many people have bought SIM cards, some with an eye, clearly, to selling them on. If you make a policy you should stick to it yourself. Bit rich for 2D to say 'no trading your numbers on TradeMe, but oh, it's OK for us to do it'.

I'm a great supporter of 2D, I love what they're doing to bring down the price of calls and txts here, but I don't think they made a good impression with their website fiasco and their 'don't do as I do, do as I say' approach to the (fairly minor) issue of phone numbers will not boost their reputation.

There is no double standard, just a changing of rules in the middle of the game.

They can change T&Cs at any time to be honest, possibly requiring notice, but they can if they choose to.

Seriously folks. These are numbers. They are not yours, not even after you get the right to use them. They still belong to a license assigned to an operator.

They can auction "special" numbers on Trade Me because they have the license to do whatever pleases them with the numbers in their range. They make the rules, and seriously I think you guys are giving too much importance to this.

Besides what Mauricio said, it should be noted there is no double standard. They auctioned numbers on Trademe for charity, and they're telling you that you can auction numbers on Trademe too - if it's for charity. I don't see how the rules are any different here...

Go 2-degrees! I seem to recall that the mobile numbers belong to the the network operator and they reserve the right to recall them. It's different putting up one simcard that you bought than these scumbags working the system (not even a slightly decent number was available for me to choose at 10:10 AM on the morning) for their own greedy financial gain.

my perfect number (the same as I have on another network) was in the charity auction but went for much more than the rest in that selection! dunno why as it was actually the most undesirable of the lot but glad kidz first got a wallop of much needed cash.

beware of what a seller may define as "charity" though, I could make up a paradoxed fund ;-)

There is a glaring issue that people are missing here, this message pops up when you pop onto My 2Degrees.... What happens to the poor guy who forks out for a SIM on TM, then the seller doesn't donate proceeds and SIM gets deactivated? Seller doesn't care, it potentially becomes a hideous marketing exercise for 2D....

That's a very good point! No security for the buyer of the SIM... Look's like he will be the one losing out the most!
