sbiddle: Your copper isn't disconnected or removed when fibre is installed, so maintaining a PSTN connection from Telecom along with a fibre connection is fine.

Don't count on that.  Chorus won't want to run 2x overlay networks.
They've even said in the UFB conferences that they will probably remove the copper.

However in saying that, the few UFB install sites that I've been to in Albany *haven't* had the copper removed yet.

  • Is it possible to get Orcon while remaining with Telecom for voice, i.e. get Orcon internet only?

The UFB ONT has 2x ATA ports built in for Voice.
I'm not sure about which RSPs (Telecom included) are offering services using it, but theoretically you can get UFB and just a phone service using said ATA port if you really want.
ie. Grandma who lives in a brand new subdivision with fibre/UFB only, who might not want the internet.

There are also 4x UNI ports, so you could actually get services from multiple different RSPs at the same time.  Doesn't have to be internet, ie. Sky might launch an Ethernet based set top box, or whatever.

Whether you can get a Telecom Voice service with Orcon UFB Internet right now, I don't know.
That's a question for Telecom Retail.  But Orcon can't stop you obtaining other services as well as theirs.
(But Genius Voice is built in to the product, so you won't be able to save costs by not using it)

  • I use a Juniper SSG20 as my primary firewall. Any idea where I can get confirmation on what the requirements are for an Orcon fibre connection, from a firewall perspective?

From a Layer3/4 firewall perspective?  Anything.
From a RGW/CPE point of view, your device must support Dot1q VLAN Tagging on the WAN iface (VID 10), and DHCP for address assignment.

(Oh and if you want to, you can mark frames you wish to be classified as "Within CIR" or "Discard Ineligible" by using PCP 4.  Obviously this will only affect your egress traffic, not downloads.)
