I noticed a few issues a couple of weeks back but it seems to be resolved now for me. They were mostly to do with rapidshare but the old .html trick sorted that out pretty quickly.

Currently getting nice fast international/national speeds (in chch) But i can never get a speedtest that actually reflects my download speeds. :)

My International speeds seem to be fine now, (by fine I mean back to how it was 3 weeks ago).

And it is like this now: youtube, goes at about 50KB/s (this might be youtube...?) can't watch youtube videos with out pausing it.

And other downloads (Rapdishare, and / or Direct HTTP links, are all varying speeds now, from 100KB/s to 600KB/s then to 300KB/s then to 550KB/s and so on, but when I download it in the morning (7AM) i get 615KB/s constant.

Is this just happening because Orcon doesn't have enough bandwidth for every one to use on peak times like now...? or is this something Orcon can fix?????

Hi Duncan,

Welcome back. Hope you had a recharging break from the net :) Thank you for returning to the thread.

Since seeing mattosaur4's post, and hearing that downloads seem to be running smoothly again, I thought I might hijack the remainder of this thread to focus on the latency concerns. Hope this helps.

Synopisis
* It appears that two way streaming services/applications are not recieving a stable rate of latency during peak hours, for Orcon customers.

Behaviours observed...
1) Gamers getting lag spikes during play. In-game latency meters swinging from 200ms to 10,000ms ping. Doesn't necessarily relate to in-game activity (meter can jump when players are inactive with no environmental changes occuring)
2) Some disconnection from game servers following extended lag periods (prob just server rejecting due to percieved no-reply)
3) Voice software (Ventrillo, Teamspeak, Skype) across all sorts of servers getting delays, broken speech, and conversation lag of 1-3 minuutes.
4) Video conferencing software (only heard of Skype so far) experiencing same issue as in point 2.

Issues have been reported by...
1) Orcon customers on both 'new' and old plans
2) I have seen some similar complaints from Xnet customers, but not as many
3) Many Kiwis on alternative ISPs using these same services report having no problems at all.

I haven't done much testing into International speeds as most of my random problems have been drastic i.e. sites like www.amazon.com have taken 40 secs to come up.  Things like only getting 30 Kbps instead of an expected 100 Kpbs when downloading I've just lived with. I've also been away for a week and just home today. Ventrillo is still unusable and WoW latency is currently at 390-500ms (US Server).  I was able to watch some Trailers on the Apple site with minimal waiting which hasn't been the case for about 6 weeks & downloading a 20mb file was running around 100k instead of 82bytes a sec which I got at one point 2 weeks ago.

I had my first problems with World of Warcraft (US Server) round about 10 March 08. It was a period of bad latency jumping from 300-10000ms for about 10 days. It was then fine for about 3 weeks and that's when Ventrilo became unusable and has been ever since. My in-game latency of late has been Ok at around 200-500 and hasn't jumped that much. I can also use the in-game voice service with minimal lag.

As far as I know Ventrillo uses 1 TCP Port and 2 UDP ports & since v3 they seem to be next available / randomly chosen. TCPView shows the following from 3 seperate times I had it open. No firewall or other apps are blocking the traffic & I've tried other machines.

For users who are seeing high latency to WoW servers, it would help to know exactly which ones. E.g. while ingame run a netstat and post the IP address of the server you're connected to (it'll be on port 3724). Would be good to see a trace to that specific address as well.

Noob guide to Netstat (cause I'm a noob and had have never done it before. Lemmee know if any corrections.)

1) Click Start
2) Launch command window
- XP: click run, type command, press okay
- Vista: search for command and choose it
-> Not sure about Mac or Linux soz
3) Type netstat whist WoW is running
4) Look down the list under heading 'Foreign Address' for a bunch of numbers with 3724 at the end after a colon (this will be WoW). Do the same with other programs running, should be able to guess which is which.

Instructions -> When you post please list: Your Orcon plan | The netstat address | Latency experienced

Noob guide to Netstat (stolen directly from Pyros post on GP forums!)

In the same command box type "tracert XXX.XX.XXX.X" and press enter
X's will be replaced with the address you got during the Netstat. Can leave the port off the end (the bit from ':' onwards)

I am having the same issue with internet speed
i am using max/128k 15G plan
and every time i start using BT for like 10 second
my internet will get disconnect or the speed will stay 1-3k

anyone can explain is it something wrong with my pc ??
or just orcon ???

You won't be able to connect BT during peak hours.

Recently they have started slowing downloads outside of peak hours although they don't say so.

Looking at their new plans I think they want to stop people using p2p as much as possible.

The kodia takeover has totally screwed a great ISP.

They have to check each packet to see if it is p2p or not and it is a big overhead.

Everything is a bit slow. Kodia has really screwed orcon.

Ok, so it sounds like its time to abandon Orcon and their crap ways. Which ISP actually works properly? I see just as many complaints about Xnet.

Just to clarify (again) we are not shaping traffic. We do manage traffic through the use of a Layer 7 traffic management appliance, however this only restricts the bandwidth to P2P applications in the event that the volume of P2P traffic is degrading the performance of other traffic. While this appliance does run 24/7 it doesn't actually do anything off-peak as there is more than enough bandwidth to allow P2P traffic to run as fast as it wants to go.

I am not an expert on this appliance, but from what I understand the packet inspection does not add a huge amount of overhead - certainly no where near enough to cause the latency that people are reporting. I am sure that Thomas will be able to provide more information on this.

Again, for clarity - we have been open and honest about our use of this appliance (the explination has been on our website for more than 18 months), and it has been running for some time now, including a significant period of time before we were acquired by Kordia.

Duncan, is Orcon throttling BT traffic OFF peak now? In my experience in the weeks or so, the answer is Yes, preformance is nowhere near what it used to be,

Your website still says it will be restricted to Peak Hours?

This, combined with constant billing problems Orcon has been giving me for the last 3 months, is pushing a long time supporter
of Orcon away

. I have transfered many customers to Orcon in the past, i hope these issues will be solved soon,
