Youtube is back to constant buffering and this is totally unacceptable. This is with a 13Mbit/0.9Mb line speed. Can you guys please buy some more of the bandwidth, we're paying you for, and stop trying to share what you've got now. It seems this isn't working. It was great for a few days, now it's back where to where it was. We're cabinetised, UBS in Mairangi Bay. Telecom are looking very attractive now, especially when "I can get what I really want".

We need to get organised, obviously.

Maybe we can start with what should be expected, as fair and reasonable, and "fit for purpose", from a broadband connection advertised as max/max ?

A la Consumer guarantees act ...

Any legal-eagle geeks out there?

I hate to break it to you but there are no service level agreements for a standard residential ADSL connection, no gaurantees.  It's a best effort shared network system as reflected by the (very low) price compared to any form of non shared dedicated connection.

With that said there are other ISP's doing a better job of managing their services, what's keeping you with Orcon?

Let's try again ...

In law, something that is sold (goods or services) must be fit for purpose.

In connection with broadband, what does "fit for purpose" mean?

You could waste a lot of time and effort trying to establish what those purposely vague statements in the CGA mean with regard to a complex service like broadband... it's a lot easier with simple phsyical goods.

Orcon doesn't have a contract term for it's plans, if the current service is not acceptable to you why are you so hesitant to pull the trigger and change provider? Losing customers would be a pretty clear message to Orcon something is wrong, and it would save you a lot of time and hassle.

You might have noted that all businesses seek to minimise customer churn by introducing inertia to be overcome. Disruption to service, hardware configuration changes, billing quagmire, etc., all contribute hugely to the amount of time and hassle involved in changing providers.

Orcon's complicated and un-intuitive (for Orcon employees not just customers!) billing/invoicing system is an asset in this regard, as it's very difficult to fathom how one is being charged and for what. Most people shrug their shoulders and give up. So they are not only uninterested in fixing it, they have a real, tangible reason for retaining it.

I just visited a client in Takapuna. They have Orcon LLU with the phone exchange very close. Speedtest.net test to Auckland was a fantastic 18Mb/1Mb, about the best I've seen. SD Youtube clips buffered like a wheezy old smoker, on a brand new Core2Duo system I installed there. Thanks Orcon, you need to do something FAST, and an update on time frame would go someway towards helping.

Yeh my speeds to los angeles server on speedtest which is where the youtube server is based is down 2 Mbs as we speak 1pm and has been this way for 4 days now, usually i get 6mbs and 6months ago 10mbs+ at this time to los angeles and then it would drop at peak time, and my lines are always good running 18mbs to local server.

I Feel things will get better since they have had a increase in prices from 1 dollar to 2 dollars a gig which should put more money towards buying international bandwith.

Aw i feel for u guys. Im having the opposite effect. I rarely get buffering problems with youtube, so i dnt know why its ok for sum and not for others? I have a 5mb speed connection located on the manukau exchange with a Dlink-502T Modem/Router if that helps?

Heres a screenshot taken while loading a youtube vid, as u can see no buffering problems.

That's the strange thing. It appears to have little logic to it, at least from the outside.

I'm sure sound dude would be more than happy to enlighten us.

I think if you look for a message from 'sounddude' a few days ago he mentioned that they have to balance traffic over their various upstream links temporarily.
Now unfortunately there is no clear and cut way of doing this perfectly so you'll find that some IP ranges are advertised out one link and other ranges via another. As traffic levels vary over the course of the day they will even be making adjustments to try and keep things as balanced as they can throughout the day.

I believe they have recently upgraded their connectivity to their upstream providers and thus will be able to better advertise their DSL routes in a less fragmented way.

Orcon's networks are looked after by a very very competent senior network engineer + team who's got many many years experience behind him, and others who have been around the ISP industry for a while will know he knows what he's doing so you'll have to sit tight and wait till its sorted properly.

On the bright side with Orcon they normally come good as opposed to some other ISPs who consistently over subscribe their bandwidth all year around. Perhaps one could say that you've been spoilt.

and no I have no dealing with Orcon at all, closest I've come is the Orcon parking lot when I got lost looking for Canon :)

*edit, looks like they had some other agregation issue thats been solved too taking from another thread here.

Just thought I would let Orcon know, or the thread at least, that I am having a wonderful time waiting for my 2 minute SD video to load.
I'm sitting here, looking at my screen doing nothing. Its a lot of fun doing this - you should all try it.

All very well, insane dude, but Orcon have had quite a while to get this sorted. It's been going on for months.

And I don't buy the argument (whoever makes it) that there are so many customers so it's difficult to resolve. More customers = more revenue = more resources > solution.

I don't doubt that it's difficult, but the economies of scale should see them resolving problems like this (not just youtube -bandwidth problems in general) with a minimum of delay. And stay on top of them.

Maybe I'm being unrealistic in my expectation that Orcon deliver on their product advertising, or should I say, the impression that Orcon aim to deliver through their advertising, which appears to be quite different from what is delivered.
