Ragnor:
kinnadian: I was under the impression that this content server would operate similarly to the Snap Youtube Cache, whereby files are not placed onto the server until someone had downloaded it, and then all other viewers would watch the version from the Cache.

I don't think Steam content mirrors are as sophisticated as google/youtube caches. Content is either on the Steam content mirror or it isn't.

I believe you're right. Snap have absolutely no say on what goes on the cache. Valve has full control over the sever.

Hey all,

There is more info on the steam cache available here:
http://www.snap.net.nz/support/content/3/63/en/what-is-the-steam-content-server.html

As mentioned above, we have no control over whether or not something is actually in our cache - this is managed by Valve.

Cheers

Hey Ralph, thanks for your reply and nice to see some official information about the content server.

However, the majority of us all know most of this, we are concerned about the content server being populated. If it is controlled by Valve, is the best course of action to contact Valve and ask them kindly to fill up the server? Is it a "wait until it happens" kind of thing, or would some polite prompting help speed it along? Do you know if there is enough HDD space on the Snap! content server for a good portion of the games catalog?

With the steam xmas sale coming up on Monday, it would be really nice to have the opportunity to download uninhibited :D

My other question is, if we can't hope for the content server to be populated until Jan/Feb (likely, since it is the holiday period), is it possible to set up some cheap/free connection to the Telstra Clear content server? Since, as I understand it, national data is almost free whilst international bandwidth is the bottleneck of the country (and hence the source of costs of internet data). I realise that they are a competitor and this is unlikely, but questions are free! I know previously you have had such a "Free national data" service with the University of Canterbury.

I apologize for my probably apparent impatience :)

Edit: Had a look on google, and an employee at a Australian ISP said that he had to initiate further correspondence with Valve in order for them to increase the amount of content stored.

Maybe Ralph could have a word with the powers that be and get it so that if snap servers see that we downloading from a NZ steam server they let us get it for 0 bandwidth (as a holiday present for us) Laughing
