So now there's a Snap option for download regions on steam? And according to the twitter people it's unmetered? Does anyone have any more info regarding it, like the percentage of content loaded on currently, because once again there seems to be no info on the Snap website :/

Would be good for them to tell us, plus also give a list of current cached games. I downloaded the full set of DoW games overnight from the snap! content server and I checked this morning and it had used 15gb of my cap! Not so pleased with that.

ISP's do not control or know exactly what is on a Steam content server/mirror, that is managed by Valve.

Consider it a nice bonus if it comes from the cache.

So I have just wasted 15Gb of my data on the 1st day of the new month on the basis that selecting the snap content server would have been unmetered? This is why a list would be good, as I would not have downloaded these games IF they where not on the snap content server.

At the least some kind of FAQ and an IP address for the cache so we can check if steam is connecting to it.

The download region in Steam is just a guide, Steam will typically use multiple content servers to download games. This is not Snap's fault that's how steam works (obviously is isn't a problem in the rest of the world where there aren't data caps).

To try and force Steam to use only one server you need to install a third party solution like SteamWatch, Freys Steam Filter or SteamManager.. most of these are made by Australians as they are one of the only other countries who have data caps.

ooooo does this mean that we will be able to do our steam downloads without eating into our caps?? - (Scurries away to do some research on the program called steamwatch cause methinks I might be needing it)

Hmm that's interesting, looks like they have written some php to list out what's on the server I guess.

Found this on another forums, details how to setup the firewall on windows 7 or vista...
Only thing is until we know the IP address of snap content server we cannot set it up, but it gives you an idea of the setup incase you didn't know. (NOTE: the 203.167.129.x addresses are for telstra NOT snap, you will replace those 2 addresses with the IP one before and one after snaps content server)

People using Windows 7 or Vista (sorry XP users!) will have a firewall capable of this built into their OS. On Windows 7, you can find this by opening Control Panel, then going to System and Security and clicking Windows Firewall. Once there, click "Advanced Settings", which will open "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security".
Go to "Outbound Rules" and click "New Rule".
Select "Custom" and press next, then next again to skip the Program selection screen (you could set this up to only apply to Steam, but it doesn't really matter) and go to the Protocol and Ports screen.
Change protocol type to "TCP" and under "Remote port" select "Specific Ports" and enter "27030", then click next.
Under "Which remote IP addresses does this rule apply to?", click "These IP addresses"
Click "Add..." then "This IP address range:" and enter "0.0.0.0" in the "From:" box and "203.167.129.3" in the "To:" box, then click "OK"
Click "Add..." again and then "This IP address range:" and enter "203.167.129.5" in the "From:" box and "255.255.255.255" in the "To:" box, then click "OK"
Click next to go to the "Action" page and leave this on "Block", click next again to go to the "Profile" page.
On the "Profile" page, depending on your situation uncheck any boxes where you don't want this rule to apply. If in doubt, leave them all checked.
Click next and enter a name in the "Name" box. I called my rule "TelstraClear Content Server", but this is arbitrary.
Click "Finish"
From now on, Steam should only connect to TelstraClear's server for content updates!

Perhaps TelstraClear, and Orcon along with SNAP! should share the content on their cache servers with each other using a centralized server or link of some sorts.

Yes, I noticed that as well, seems it might not have even started yet. - What I have been reading, is that when Steam starts uploading to an ISP the whole thing goes live, seems the ISP's have no controll over this and cannot hide the server once steam starts uploading the content..
As for the sharing idea, that's something that would be up to steam not the ISP's, and I very much doubt they would let that happen..

Bleh... Forgot to tell the others using the line that my relay of the twitter "steam is unlimited' statement isn't entirely true, gonna be an expensive month for data... Not too pleased

What exactly is on the steam server?? The person on twitter says "top 50 games of last tournament", which tournament is this, and is content continuing to be loaded on?

Helps please someone from Snap.

Yes the server is unmetered, i downloaded 10GB unmetered from it at 1mb/s which was awesome. But you just have to make sure that your firewall is configured to block all other steam servers traffic as stated in an earlier post

There are applications like steamwatch which will allow you to configure your download location, and it will block the other regions.

The one problem, is if the content isnt hosted on the server you specify, then you cant download your game.
