Yeah some fair comments there,
I think size can be both a blessing and a curse though as changes are harder to implement on a large scale and sometimes their suppliers may not be able to give them the kind of connectivity they need.

See how they have only just recently increased their handover circuits from multiple gig links to 10gig ones, I'm fairly confident that they were waiting on their layer 1 provider for this as they've had their ERX's and big juniper M series routers for some time now.

It is interesting though that they have changed their traffic management policies a number of times over the last few years to try keep up with what users are doing, having various customer segments would make this overly complicated.

I don't follow Orcon very much but from what I've seen most users are happy with their service and get good speeds? not?
Is your main issue that there seems to be some sort of inequality between users of the same class service or that some applications / sites are managed to a point where its unusable?

nice little NZ ISP comparison to see whether you've got an unrealistic expectation :) , results will be better with more participation!

Finally can anyone else confirm if what Aaroona said is true?

Hello itr0nic, your youtbe experiance sound ideal, but you need to try a video longer then 30sec, try this one tonight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfgz90Y93c0&hd=1 so with our speedtest results it should be great.

I cannot understand why you would say that Youtube is awesome at 8:30 AM, its like saying Auckland doesn't have a road problem at 4 AM, try the HD's between 5PM and 11 PM.

Well, after being a very loyal customer of Orcon for many years, and having moved many customers and friends there, I'm now a very angry customer. After much waiting for the abysmal Youtube performance to be fixed, yet having 13Mb/0.9Mb local line speeds, I decided to shift to Telecom when my plan rolls over on the 22nd Sept. After all Orcon's advertising about having no contracts, I assumed it would be no problem. I then found I have to give a months notice and put up with this dreadful performance for yet another month. After complaining loudly to a CSR, they promised a "Manager of Cancellations" would call me back on Friday. they never did. I feel I have every right to leave ASAP since they clearly are unable to give an adequate service. One things for sure, if they enforce this, I'll never go back.

Hi,

I had the same problems and I left Orcon, due to there dreadful service.

Upon calling I was also notified of the 1 month wait... my gosh. They don't make it easy to leave.

And then, wait it gets better... try get a credit for something orcon has charged you for, as in, I left orcon and they still charged me 1 full normal month (nearly $200.00) yet I had already cancelled and played out my 1 month waiting period.

It took 5 weeks to get that $200.00 ammount credited back,

Now I have got telecom, and all my mates who live near, were also orcon customers, after seeing how awesome the internet is on telecom, they have subsequently left orcon...

Great way to loose customers orcon, provide crap service since June, and don't fix it... I'm sure a free weekend at a hotel really makes your crap internet better... (scarcasim)

Yes we are considering leaving Orcon as well. Over the years I have recommended countless friends, colleagues and clients to Orcon and when I have an issue would you think they listen? Nope. Just another punter. Too bad, as Duncan et all make efforts but ultimately are taking the piss in the way that the service is "delivered". Any company that is doing their job properly doesn't resort to quoting the small print so readily as Orcon have come to do. There are good people there, but unfortunately the overall picture has been steadily worsening.

In case anyone has been fed the "You need to give a months notice" story, it turns out this is not correct at all, if you've been with Orcon since before 2007 and you're on a UBS "grandfathered plan" as I am. Again, more promises of a call from a "cancellation manager" came to nothing, so I decided to suffer another month and pay for the torture anyway. Anyway, once I got through to cancellations, they told me I wasn't bound by the 30 day rule and could pay up to any date I liked. I sure hope this all works out without overcharging or a period without broadband. I'm expecting the worst, sorry to say. I'm sure someone's going to punish me.

Just out of interest, I ran a Neotrace from here to a number of sites on the west coast of the USA. All but Youtube showed a pretty direct route from Auckland with reasonable speed. However, the route to Youtube is via Sydney, then Tokyo and then onto Youtube in Sunnyvale California. It looks like the bottleneck is between Sydney and Japan. Anyway, I hope to be on Telecom on Friday, all going well. Never thought I'd ever ever leave Orcon to go there.

+1 Tongue out

But seriously, when Xtra/Telecom start giving crap performance for YouTube (among other services), is everyone going to jump ship again ?

Ill admit Ive done it in the past though...

Quicksilver : Fine until Woosh bought them out and ran it into the ground.
IHUG/VFNZ: Customer service sucked. Got lied to..... (may have been Telecom giving the info that was incorrect but IHUG should have done more to check into it)
XNet : Everyone knows the issues that appeared with them etc...
Orcon : Im happy with Orcon, network performance has been fine for me - YouTube vids I leave to buffer for 10-20s then hit play, downloads from various sources come through at reasonable rates, torrents 400k+ regularly and so on..........

Just because one site is failing to meet your expectations seems a bit naff to swap ISPs.
