Slingshot now says SKY not running their ads:

SKY bans Slingshot advertising

Sky TV is refusing to run Slingshot’s latest TV ads, in a move the ISP says is unjustified and petty.

Slingshot’s latest TV ads briefly feature the ISP’s Global Mode service, which makes it easy for users to access Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming video services.

Slingshot GM Taryn Hamilton says SKY imposed the ban late on Friday, and the move smacks of protectionism and censorship.

“It’s a sad day when our TV stations start to ban ads because they feel threatened by one of their advertisers and the products they are offering. In this case SKY is using its position to obstruct Slingshot because they feel intimidated by Global Mode.

“And the thing is, Global Mode only exists because Kiwis want access to quality streaming video at a good price. When and if local companies manage to finally crack that, then there will be no need for the service. But, until that time, people will use services like Global Mode so that they can see decent TV without having to get a second mortgage.”

Why should a commercial organization carry ads for a company that damages it's business? It's not in the interests of the shareholders, and the management and directors could be liable if they let it continue. This is not censorship, this is living in a free society.

Yes. It is like TV3 carrying ads for TVNZ....

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

A free society also shouldn't be based on oligopolism.
Sure I agree with you that Sky should be able to choose to not run any ad they like.
I hope their managers and shareholders eventually receive exactly what they deserve - which isn't the license to print money that they're enjoyed for so long.

Seems like TVNZ have also banned advertisements from Slingshot promoting Global Mode.

I had global mode from day one and only recently realised how limited it is. I can view Netflix etc on the laptop but once I started trying to use PS3 and Chromecast app it kept failing. Since then I figured I'll just use a service like Unotelly. Until Slingshot actually fully unblocks global services it's still more of an advertisement than a true reality.

Chromecast actually uses its own DNS. You need more than Global Mode/Unblock-Us/UnoTelly to get it going. Not a Global Mode problem really. Read more here for some instructions.

If you want more channels/services then, yes, you will need a third party DNS or VPN.
