Signed up with quic for my broadband as it offers one-off static ip. Going to move when current bill cycle finishes.

Will move family mobiles to spark tomorrow.

To be honest, I do not really care about forking out extra $10 each number for those who share my mobile data. Moving to spark will definitely cost more, with or without that $10 2Degrees wants.

It is a typical lose-lose situation when trust is gone.

Hope management team at 2Degrees can find a better way to communicate with their customers next time.

This may be going a little bit offtopic but bear with me.

In Australia, data sharing is a thing and most of the operator (eg. Voda, Telstra, Optus) plans will 'pool' by default. Telstra (ultra premium pricing) offers the ability to add data sim's for $10 a month on their essentials or higher upfront plans.

Vodafone AU and Optus also offer similar offerings (expect to pay around $10 to $20/month depending on how good you are at negotiating). I realize that Australia is a different market but I guess pointing out that data sharing/pooling isn't some bespoke thing that only 2D has done - many operators around the world have figured out how to make it work sustainably. I think they just need to figure out a pricing model which fairly reflects the costs of providing data pooling services.

@JinMao the changes are in the progress of being rolled back meaning you don’t need a prepaid plan as per the update on the previous page but as you say also they’ve made a whole lot of people lose trust. Here’s hoping that other providers do see there is a need to get additional devices connected and run with it.

@cokemaster while I know we’re not the most expensive some fresh new competition and innovation is really needed right now. Providers have had the same sort of plans now for some time with zero actual innovation.

Yes - its been interesting over here. Definitely some concepts over here that could make some waves in NZ (although suspect would be difficult with NZ's MVNO margins today)...

  • The operators over here seem to be gravitating towards 'upfront' plans which are like On Account/Pay monthly but have no excess usage / additional charges (eg. no premium SMS, 0900's, outside call allocation), it goes a long way to being able to keep the kids on a plan without worrying about shock bills.

  • Some of the MNVO's offer supermarket discounts eg. Woolworths mobile, Coles Mobile (10% off a shop once a month).

  • Some offer family plans where you get a number of sim's off a single plan (a few people at work use this to great effect) eg. Aldi

  • Some have gone down the 'unlimited, but throttled' route, offering 20mbps up/down flatrate. Eg. Felix Mobile.

Yup, I do understand 2D is reverting the changes regarding this matter. But maybe I am too stubborn😎. As an ICT worker, I just hate uncertainties.

Does anyone know if the sim cards need to be topped up now every year after this?

I have had 2degrees sim cards for a few years now without topping up at all and they still worked fine with data share on my ipad, and I thought it'll never expire.

But on one of the comments I heard was that it was supposed to expire after a year if not topped up?

Refer back to the answer on the previous page which states:

SaskiaDonnell: I’ll cut to the chase – we have heard you and the team is working hard to reverse this and reinstate data sharing as you know it, we should have this done by the end of the weekend.

This means everything is being reverted back to how they were - sim expiry included.

I hope that is the case.

I do have a phone number that I need to keep alive but I rarely need to make phone calls with it, just data. So I only top up if I need to.

Judging from what has happened in the past few days, forgive me if I am a bit sceptic about all of this.

I am just afraid that my number would one day just expire and I won't have a way to get it back again.

SaskiaDonnell:

**brand new social media manager for 2degrees shuffles into the chat**

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to introduce myself, I’m Saskia, I have taken over from Sarah, and you’ll see me around here a lot.

For a little background on me, I've previously been the social media and strategy team leader over at Mighty Ape and have run my own entertainment review blog (Pretty Much Geeks) up until recently. I'm a lover of 90s point and click adventure games, tabletop games, cats and cake making. Telecommunications is a massive new challenge for me - so please bear with me as I get my head around everything.

It’s not lost on me that my first post is on an issue that we have bungled. Totally classic that this has happened in week 2 of the new job 😅

I’ll cut to the chase – we have heard you and the team is working hard to reverse this and reinstate data sharing as you know it, we should have this done by the end of the weekend.

In the interest of transparency, we let ourselves down in two areas. Firstly in understanding how popular the service was and the ramifications of any changes, and secondly in communicating the changes.

Apologies from me and the team for the situation. We should have done better. Thankfully we can reverse it, and you can continue using the service as you have been.

Thanks for a great post Saskia and welcome. Great to have direct involvement of company representatives on the site and we should all encourage this by showing appreciation.  It's also good when a company admits they dropped the ball and then tries to provide a remedy.  We need to recognise positive responses to issues and I think on this occasion 2degrees have responded to concerns admirably - while some may have justifiably been really annoyed by the change hopefully they can recognise that 2degrees has tried to provide a solution.

Can anyone confirm that the change has actually been reverted and data sharing is working again?

When I first got the message last Thursday that data sharing had stopped I immediately bought a $10 prepay plan - as instructed - but I didn't get a text to say that data sharing had been reactivated. So instead I stopped sharing (got a text to say it was stopped) and started again (but got no text to say it had started, even though I'd bought the $10 plan).  Also the 250mb in my newly added plan started going down - 5 days on I'm now at 100mb and falling.  Can someone confirm how data sharing is supposed to work if you have data in your own plan - does your own data get used first, and data sharing will only start when I get to 0mb left?

I've tried starting/stopping data sharing daily since this fiasco but I only ever get the text to say it's stopped, never one to say it's started again, so I'm really paranoid that when I get to 0mb it's just going to wipe all my credit.  Can anyone else try starting/stopping data sharing and confirm they only get a stop text, not a start one - is something just broken at the 2degrees end regarding the texts, or is it something about my account?

So the sim in my dashcam looks like it stop working thursday or friday but was able to connect to my dashcam yesterday using the app with data sharing over 4g/5g, so yes it looks like it's working again.

I didn't even notice it stopped till i saw this on Sunday and checked.

Having also just been through this latest drama with 2D, I'm sharing 1.5GB data with my teenage daughter. Thought it was pretty rubbish and last minute with no warning just a txt as already discussed.

I see Kogan Mobile do a ($160) 365 day Pre-Pay Plan, works out to $13.15 for 30 days for 1.5GB, unlimited calls and txts to NZ numbers.

If I have to spend $10 on the basic 2D plan the question is - Is 1.5GB worth $3.15 for me to keep my 1.5G?

There is definatley an annoyance factor being felt here also the satisfaction that moving away from 2D they will lose business, poor word of mouth and likely 2D will loose a potential future customer when she finally has to start paying her own way.

Stunts like this will be very difficult for 2D to measure this loss of business.

This issue has been resolved and data sharing is working again for everyone as it always has.

I'm going to lock this thread. 2degrees - Don't mess with data sharing again please!

That didn't last long didn't it...

Like, bloody hell 2degrees. You on a speedrun to piss off as many customers as possible or something? Sure this is better than requiring a full plan but it's another way of "fighting for fair" by grabbing as much money for yourselves from your customers instead of "fighting for fair" by providing competition in New Zealand.

Good job... As you haven't screwed around with existing sharers yet I'll leave this back open for discussion.

Yes I am currently looking at the offers from both One and Spark to move my personal mobile over (already have the work one moved after the “soon but later” bulls**t around wearables).

It does look like they have spent time doing this rather than working on things customers have been asking / screaming about.  All Vocus has done is remove value from 2d plans and services.

Now a better way to have done all this…….

”Hi all, we know you want wearables and all going to plan it should be around xxxx, will update if this changes.  Also due to wearables we have had to make some changes to sharing data, wearables will be around the $x mark and we will be reducing the amount of “free” data sharing from 5 to 2.  This still means you can share your data with your tablet and 1 other device for free, after that any other shares are $5. We understand that its a bit of a change but we think we have found a balance between charging and being fair”

But nope, no info on anything and having to find out about the changes via a banner in our accounts.
