My download speeds were resolved today after a Chorus Tech spent time out on the street and informed me that this problem was not anything to do with Slingshot but with Telecom.
As expected and as I have thourght the big boy is doing everything he can to make life difficult for the other players in the game.
My download speeds are back to what they were before,blazing fast.
The golden rule "He who holds the gold makes the rule" and Telecom are obviously still packing.

So basically you had a line fault/issue, it happens old stuff wears out and breaks over time... then Chorus fixed it for you.

All good.

Telecom changed something in the cabinet that has caused a fault and at the same time changed over to a new system which is costing Slingshot more money to lease. Slingshot are using the opportunity to extract more money by requiring me to upgrade my plan to fix the fault. If I change to a newer plan it will cost more I don't want to start another plan that has early break fees.

Is anyone else having problems with the download line rate being lower than the upload? (I think its just a line fault at the exchange end. (If there is a bad connection at the exchange end the line capacitance would allow upload data with low loss but kill download signals. If only I could get in the exchange. 5 minutes with a soldering iron and I’d have it fixed)

If I switch to telecom will they fix the line it if it’s an existing fault?

Sounds like your line is not being terminated in the cabinet and passed through to the exchange.

Long story short Slingshot shouldn't really have sold you a "better network" connection when your address was scheduled to be connected to a cabinet.

Check your address here for what exchange/cabinet area you're in:

The $10 difference is price and change of plan is because when you were connected to the exchange they were able to provide your connection over cheaper Vodafone wholesale equipment in the exchange.

Now that your line passes through the cabinet your connection really needs to be terminated in the cabinet on Telecom wholesale equipment. Currently no other ISP's have installed gear in cabinets yet so "better network" inside the cabinet is not an option. Also staying terminated on the exchange and passing through the cabinet will result is bad performance and reliability so that's no really an option either.

As mentioned earlier Slingshot shouldn't really have sold you the better network plan if you were due to connection to the cabinet.

So yes... your two options are go on a Slingshot plan that's provided over Telecom wholesale gear/equipment or change ISP. All will be providing the service over Telecom wholesale gear/equipment in the cabinet but many other ISP's have better service/support/speed than Slingshot.

On the bright side once properly terminated on gear in the cabinet you will get a much higher line rate/sync speed (should be >10Mbit).

i would like to know how to get this done
our home connection is so shotty.

cant watch a youtube video without it buffering for 1 minutes. only after playin 5 seconds of the clip.

yet i know if i download that flv. its like 40mb file. and at fullspeed i can download that 40mb file in a few minutes. (3.3m @ 200k) if i do the math right. lol. so that would mean 5 seconds of buffer time should be adequate to get start playing the whole thing through because the downspeed should exceed the overhead of total playing time vs download time. right.. wrong.

good old slingshot. know exaclty whats going on. and dont care.

im so off SS right now..

go to telecom or telstra if ya can .... been with telecom for years and never had any issues, my house is 50 years old and okay i dont no where the cabinet is around here also have had a central spliter installed which has helped keep a constant happy broadband connection .

You are correct,Slingshot are aware of what is going on but I can also assure you that it is Telecom that is causing the problems at the moment.
Remember each and every other company has to pay for the use of Telecoms lines,as of late Telecom has been updating a lot of their equipment,I have had the same issues as most but now have great download speeds after a Chorus Tech spent some time on the street last week.

All I can say is to be patient,I have posted a few remarks on here when my download speeds were low but after looking into it in more depth found that it was Telecom causing the woe's.
This is all to do with upgrading of the network and as with most isp's everyone has to pass through Telecom.
My download speeds have returned to normal and by normal I mean up to between 7 to 800kb/s,I downloaded a 700mb file in 20minutes yesturday.
To re-enforce my statement I spoke to a Chorus tech who was working on the street replacing and upgrading equipment,once he had done so my download speeds increased almost instantly and he himself told me that the issue's were not Slingshot but with Telecom.
No i.s.p is perfect but Slingshot have had to put up with a fair share of flack lately and the problems have not been caused by them I can assure you.

Something seems to have changed on the dot of midnight 19th/20th with Slingshot. I was watching a TVNZ on demand episode when it suddenly stopped streaming at exactly midnight.

Google was still up...
geekzone was still up...

Did a few speed tests to various servers around the country and I am now getting between 14-16Mbps down, 0.81Mbps up - which is pretty much maxing out at around my attainable line sync speed.
I was only usually getting around 6-7Mbps before, even though I am on ADSL2+ (and could occasionally attain circa 14Mbps speeds, so I know I was able to get ADSL2+ speeds sometimes)

I'm in the South Island. Is it something to do with the supposed national back-haul software upgrades that they did yesterday?

International speed tests still seem to be hovering anywhere between 2-5Mbps.

Hopefully slingshot keeps this up!!!

Exactly correct.this is indeed all to do with Telecom upgrading their equipment and causing Slingshot nothing less than a barrell of problems.
Believe me when I say that a Chorus Tech told me the facts and that people were blaming Slingshot of whom he was a customer when in fact he knew exactly who was causing all the problems.
Great to hear like me your download speeds are back up,last night I was downloading at almost 1mb/s with a p2p file of 700mb,now thats amazingly fast.
I agree,well done Slingshot.

It looks like now slingshot are able to deliver enough data to choke up my pathetic line speed when I am torrenting daytime, FTP's are up abit too, normally drop to near nothing when torrenting but still doing 75ishkB/s

Will give it some time and see how it goes, but I saw a reduction in my torrent queue last night which hasnt happend in a long time without me killing things I dont really want from it.

Be patient my friend,as with a lot of Christchurch and the South Island there is a lot of upgrading going on at the moment.
I can assure you my download speeds are fantastic once again and to hear the reason from an actual tech himself it may be you suddenly increase to exellent levels,I quess it will depend on when upgrade occurs in your area.

Hi, new to this thread... Slingshot has definitely slowed down in the Auckland region during the last week or so. I used to get about 300 - 500kps download on utorrent, now only about 40-60kps. Youtube is impossible to watch and websites load slower than dialup! Currently on the Big thing # 3 with 40 Gb plan. Very disappointed

Shows how closely they monitor it. I guess they don't care until theres a major churn spike....

its almost a joke how slow it is. I will ring up and complain again tomorrow! It must be connected with the AYCE plan that has started up. Even though i am not on it, maybe all of the capacity of slingshot has gone down as more people are choking the system with P2P torrents.....
