Dude, do some reading.

Here's the bottom line: there are differences in performance when it comes to the Orcon network. If you don't understand this I'll make it clearer: just because you get good performance doesn't really mean much at all. We want Orcon to provide a decent broadband service for all customers. If there isn't enough capacity when the schoolkids are online, too bad: that's Orcon's problem to solve. If it means charging everybody more then so be it. If it involves in investing in bandwidth/resources/customer support before the demand is fully there, so be it. The problem is one of lowest common denominators. Ultimately, people are their own worst enemies.

"Dude, do some reading"

Sorry thought this thread was about U tube's performance on Orcon hence the "YouTube performance on Orcon" topic, not Orcons international bandwidth policy.

You have some valid points and it was a much better post (if off topic). Cashing u tube will reduce international traffic by leaps and bounds. The international bandwidth will become less polluted as the U tube traffic is now national (after the clip has been cashed).

National bandwidth is considerably cheaper than international and with the drop in international the better the service will be.

"Ultimately, people are their own worst enemies" this was the point i was trying to make, Orcon fix u tube and in the same thread their international bandwidth starts to get slated.

How can they win? All I intended to do was to thank them for A: Identifying an issue and B: implementing a Fix.

I would suspect that U tube would be a major slice of there international usage and this has now been converted to national traffic.

Only trouble now is if the national bandwidth caps out and the issue will change from a lack or int to a lack of national.

But again, thanks Orcon for sorting U tube out.

Yes I have to say full marks to Orcon for sorting the YouTube issue out (for me at least!). All videos I've watched in the last few days have loaded fast enough to watch without waiting. Even at peak times. Just how it should be.

So thanks guys.

Another happy customer from Orcon here too, YouTube and other streaming video sites back to its old performance with zero stutters.

The better perfomance in Youtube is because users are going to NZ news site to get infomation on what has happened in Samoa, so unless Orcon has implemented new cache technology the issue with Youtube will be back.

I visited two clients in Takapuna today, both located close to the Takapuna exchange, and both on Orcon+. Both still had absolutely dreadful Youtube performance, as I did before shifting to Telecom a couple of weeks back. I've had no regrets about shifting, except that I should have moved months ago. Getting a final settlement account to pay Orcon is another issue that drags on and on, with broken promises and inactivity.

Are they using their own DNS servers or Orcons DNS servers?

They need to use Orcons DNS servers to get the content locally.

As an aside Spong do you know exactly where the exchange is in Takapuna? I think that's the one I connect to.

I don't know for certain, but I believe it's in Hurstmere Road, next door to the old Post Office building. If it's where I think it is, both my clients are well under 1km from it, and their line attenuation figures support that.
I believe it's this white + brick building with the blue door at approx 184 Hurstmere Rd. See the following.
