I've noticed this before and now that I'm trying to use the last 200MB of a package I paid for this is getting to my nerves.

I have a Sierra Wireless device plugged to a Cradlepoint. When using a 2degrees SIM I noticed the connection can work well for one hour and then stop responding. If I restart the connection (not the router, which is still responding to internal LAN) then it starts working again. Sometimes it works for a minute and stops again. Sometimes works for 30 minutes then stops again.

Restarted the router but behaviour continues. From previous experience, using a Telecom SIM on the same hardware doesn't show any problems.

Since I had 1GB pack that I didn't use while in AKL I wanted to use the whole thing at home, but seriously the stop/start is really annoying.

Anyone else seeing this kind of behaviour?

I've found that I have to toggle flight mode on and off on my 2 Degrees S3 every now and again as Data just stops working. Sometimes I can't load something like Stuff or Facebook but Email will still work. It's weird. Had the same issue on my S2. A friend who was with Vodafone didn't have the issue with the same model phones. He's now switched to 2 Degrees and only experienced the issue when traveling from Wellington to Christchurch. After toggling flight mode, it started working fine again. Totally random

I've had issues like this with Android phones since I first got a 2degrees connection (2009?).  They're less frequent than they used to be but still annoying.  I used to switch APNs to make data work again rather than going into flight mode.

Dear Esteemed Leader,

Does this happen everywhere or at a particular location. Where exactly is this happening? Can you also PM the number on the SIM. Do you notice it happening if it's in another device?

Cheers
^POB

I had experienced this is Auckland before, while staying at the Rydges on Federal St.

I had this with the Sierra Wireless U308 on the Cradlepoint PHS300 and directly on my laptop.

I will PM the SIM number later when I get back home...

I've also had this issue with my Nokia N8, affecting it when in 2G & 3G/3.5G mode. It has been happening for the last few months.

I finally gave up & switched to Telecom. Haven't yet had any problems with data.

Just to make sure it's not my USB modem, I tried using the same SIM card on an Android device as a WiFi hotspot, and the same happens with that connection.

Struggling to go through the allowance before it expires...

This used to happen to me intermittently when I was on Vodafone several years ago, and it also happened when I first switched to 2degrees a couple of years ago. At the time the 2degrees helpdesk told me to change a setting on my iPhone (switching on data roaming, I think) which seemed to me to be irrelevant to the problem at hand but it came right after that anyway.

Fast forward to earlier this year, and the problem started happening again but it seems to have been okay again for the last few weeks.

To be honest I'm starting to get the impression that 3G networks are inherently prone to this problem, perhaps during periods of heavy loading which would drive the theory that the problem arises over time in specific locations when capacity becomes constrained and comes right when more capacity gets added in that location. However I'm certainly no network engineer and it's hard to prove of disprove my theory when these types of problems attract the typical IT geek response that "there's nothing wrong with our network and you must be imagining it".

For the last month or so i've found on my android phone that data seems to "stall" every now and again. Everything times out. Mostly turning airplane mode on and off again fixed it, but not always.
Same problem on my laptop with 2deg and different SIM (completely independent except for location) too.
This is in Christchurch.

mine does this but usually at the beginning of using data, the data connection jumps to H+ then H then 3G then E then 2G then finally drops and then goes to H and then data works

I have the same issues with my data connection - keeping a PING session active on whichever computer I'm using at the time seems to keep the connection alive, although this is somewhat impractical on a phone. Perhaps the connection timeout is set to a much lower value that the other providers?

If you'd like me to let you know the IMEI, SIM ID, phone # and location(s) of the setup I use, let me know - it happens to a co-worker of mine too, and having an active PING session in the background seems to solve the dropouts/timeouts he experiences, again, this is from a laptop and is impractical on a phone.

Activity will definitely keep it from being idled out. But the idle timer is 2 hours, so it's not too aggressive. I would have thought normal laptop (or smartphone, for that matter) app chattiness would be enough to save you from a 2 hour timeout, but it sounds to me like that's what you're experiencing. If so, simply restarting the session will work. You won't need the more extreme measures others are reporting.
