Hi.
While I was waiting for my new Snap connection to be live, even though it look a while the customer reps were very friendly and helpful and made me understand it was all Chorus's fault which was fair enough.

Back to topic, while I was waiting for internet to be connected, me and customer rep went through bit of setting up the modem and troubleshooting etc and during that process we found that my DSL light was green and was getting live signals, but internet wasn't working. Out of curiosity I asked him what sort of internet speeds can I expect at this house and how far from the exchange, basic questions.

We looked in the DSL connection settings and saw that DSL line capacity was approximately 1000Kbps upstream/ 13500Kbps downstream - average/below average considering the line has a max capacity of 24mbps. I figured it might be due to the distance from exchange but was semi satisfied with it.

BUT strange thing happened, right after we got internet and connection to Snap was made live by Chorus my DSL line capacity dropped to 8000Kbps. I cannot seem to figure out how the physical DSL line capacity changed overnight. The telephone jack was made constant, so is the modem and all the settings were the same.

Only thing that changed was the Chorus technician changing some wiring(? or did they, I don't know what exactly they did). We couldn't get the connection because apparently there was "misjumpering" and this is what Chorus fixed - and as soon as the connection was established the DSL line capacity dropped to 8mbps.

My other house is with Slingshot and it says maximum attainable capacity on that line under DSL settings is 21696Kbps but the current rate is 18019Kbps downstream and 1029 upstream.

Could someone care to explain what caused the physical line capacity to drop?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issued. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Assuming no fault conditions, it seems likely you've been moved from Slingshot's LLU equipment to Chorus equipment.  Perhaps this is old ADSL1 equipment which would indeed limit your connection speed.

I suggest that after following the helpful robot's advice above, you post up full line stats from your modem and have a look on the Chorus SAT to see what's available at your address:

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router  - Done
- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap  - Only one computer was connected at the time
- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing - Used ethernet

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan - Snap, 500gb
- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL) - ADSL2
- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest) 8000Kbps down/1000Kbps Upstream
- Your general location (or street) - George Street
- If you are rural or urban - Urban
- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin - Not sure
- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service - Not sure

-Internal wiring didn't change, the DSL stats said 13500Kbps downstream before we got connected and as I have stated, the only thing changed is Chorus fixing the 'misjumpering' issue.

Which George Street?

Also please post all the modem stats, not just connection speed...

Apologise for the confusion, the Slingshot connection is still live and is at my other house. I just posted those stats just for comparison even though I do understand it is not a fair comparison as lot of things can change such as distance to exchange etc.

The house that I'm referring to which is on George street, was with Telecom according to the property manager.

To make things clear - Slingshot connection is at my other house in Halswell. I got Snap connected at my second seperate new house in Riccarton which was with Telecom. We just moved into the Riccarton George street house.

There's seven George Streets in NZ, may pay to say what suburb.

As for your modem line stats, they need to be exact. 8000/1000 has got to be a rounded figure. We need attenuation and noise margin as well.

Yeah but does PeterReader have such witty responses or automated access into SPM to post line tests against punters names... I think not.... must.not.be.replaced.by.bot.

Mr Robot, could you also add that people should review the units of measurement relating to download speeds etc before posting :-) And how about an auto ban for people claiming Dialup Speeds unless they actually include a properly formatted reference in their post matching less than 56kbit/s :-)

Cheers - N

Will post accurate exact stats when I get home in an hour. I was only asking a general question as my logic couldn't figure it out how a line capacity can change without someone physically changing the wires.

But I was mistaken and if it requires accurate stats I will post them up soon.
