Hello there!

I thought I'll share my experience to other users who plan on going onto this plan. We are flat of 5 and we consider our self's heavy internet users.

Paying $104 a month. We are located in Riccarton a suburb in Christchurch.

Below are my snyc stats from the orcon modem which we decided to hire at cost of $4/M. So far the modem has handled large amounts of data; this includes several computers gaming at once, other computers browsing or steaming 1080p videos on youtube and other streaming sites like vimeo.

Of course after 6pm we have noticed slower speeds in downloading from international servers, however we were still able to stream at 1080p and gaming was still fine.

Downloading from a seedbox from holland we were able to reach download speeds of 1.1 to 1.2mbs consistently, in the evening slowed to 700kbs.

P2P is also slowed in the evening but this is hugely varied. Excellent during the day and very early in the morning.

The ping is constant to LA servers at 200 to 210ms most times of the day.

Has any other users here experienced an overall good internet connection from this new plan? I think this plan is great. Im not very computer originated, but i hoped i gave a good insight of how this plan works.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may sill try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

LOL @ PeterReader:

Sounds like an over all good experience. I think what makes a Unlimited plan in New Zealand work is reasonable expectation and we need more people like you :) someone who understands slow downs during peak times and not expecting unreasonable speeds :)

From this point onwards for New Zealand It can only get better

Isn't it largely depended on your local exchange?
I wonder what's the usual culprit and their order..

ie. home wiring > local cabinet > local exchange > regional exchange > international link

saturation at any point would negatively impact performance, apparently international link's never to blame.
