Hi. So I have spent fair bit of time trying to configure unblock-us DNS servers on the Fritz!box 7390. Went to Internet > Account Info > DNS Server. Entered both DNS fields with info provided by unblock-us. Save and restart the modem. Restart the machine. Try and access speedtest.net or any other US based app and it still see's my ISP as Snap.

I did some searches online and this seems to be a common issue with fritz!boxes where it's assigning it's local IP address as DNS server address on the clients itself which I can confirm as the machine states 192.168.1.1 for the DNS server when on the fritz!box itself it's unblock-us details.

Anyone with a fritz!box using unblock-us service? I have 84.05.22 firmware intstalled which came out of the box.

I just want to be able to feed unblock-us DNS on all clients via the router level which should work. just not on fritz!boxes!

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Did some hackery via export file and it's working now. DNS setup on fritzbox is rubbish. Have to change too many fields in the export file to get it working. Clearly the GUI based DNS setup is buggy as it doesn't actually works.

As the Fritz!box runs DNSmasq internally as a DNS server I suspect it's caching the requests prior to you changing the DNS.

Hmm I have a 7390 with Snap and use Unblock-us -- entered the DNS addresses into the GUI and haven't had a single problem..?

It's normal for the clients on a network to have the local IP address of the router as the DNS address - that way the client 'asks' the router and the router 'asks' the DNS server you've entered into its config.

Unblock-us only redirects some domains to the unblock-us proxies. Examples of these are Hulu.com and Netflix.com. So if you request sites it doesn't 'unblock', (like speedtest.net) - you will still be given the direct IP addresses for these sites, and thus your computer will directly connect to them.

I realized the speedtest.net part later on. The issue was more than likely as sbiddle mentioned, old cache od DNS entries not clearing up straight away. The DNS entries I have entered now for unotelly or even unblock-us via the GUI is working as it should.

Previously after the modem restart and workstation restart, I was not able to browse through netflix, hulu-plus or hbogo.com. Once I had hard coded the DSN entries via the config file, it was fine. I reverted back to factory config, entered DNS again via the gui and it has been going fine since then.
