Does anyone else see bizarre behavior on their line where the DSL will drop at exact 3.35am every night? I'm checking my logs and over the last week (7 day log) each night it drops at 3.35am.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

 



 

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

 



 

- you have reset your modem and router

 


 

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

 

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

 


 

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

 



 

- Your ISP and plan

 


 

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

 


 

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

 


 

- Your general location (or street)

 


 

- If you are rural or urban

 


 

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

 


 

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

 


 

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

 



 

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

House alarm.

Or are you on VDSL? Could be DLM re-syncing when it picks a new profile.

Edit: other thing, is it actual resyncing the dsl? Or just establishing a new ppp session.

As noted... Some routers have a "self healing" feature that it's nothing else than a reboot. Dumb, but it is.

Other things that cause this kind of problem are house alarms or a Sky box.

Either way if your router/modem loses connection because of house alarm or Sky box then you certainly need a master splitter.

My first pick would be that you have a house alarm that dials out and don't have a master splitter. A master splitter is mandatory if you have an alarm hooked up to the line to avoid such issues from happening.

Is it on a fritzbox? If so goto Internet->account information->connection settings. What do you see here? You want something like this:



You DON'T want the delay disconnection thing ticked.  I think mine came with that ticked by default and disconnected for a couple of nights - definitely not something you want if on VDSL especially ;-)

No Sky or alarm. The only thing plugged into the line is the Fritzbox. I've checked those settings, and they are exactly the same as your screenshot.

I'm not aware of any self-healing feature of the Fritzbox. I have to admit, I've been relatively unimpressed with the Fritzbox, I was sold it as a "massive upgrade" to any normal old router, but it's missing a lot of features that my D-Link has. :S

Edit: ADSL, not DSL. It's definitely a DSL drop not a PPP drop.

My flat used to have a house alarm and it turns out the old console box was still hooked up in the ceiling and "phoning home" (even though there was no working alarm or monitoring service). 3:35am seems like such a specific and intentional time (time it's least likely to disrupt things for most people) that it's almost certainly something like that.

can u paste the log from system - > event log  in the fritzbox, which shows it disconnecting? might explain why..

what features is it missing compared to your DLINK?

IIRC, I had the same issue when I swapped to Snap last year.

I think there was an automatic setting on my account that meant the connection was reset each day (thus I got a reset message showing a new IP address from my Fritzbox).

I can't see any email correspondence with them (after checking my Gmail account), so suspect I just called them up to get it changed.

I posted this exact same problem a week ago - there is a setting on the router . Just look under account settings somewhere or you can find my GZ posting on this issue. 

Don't know why they ship it like this.

This would have been out guess too - some of the Fritz's had this on by default - we automatically turn off this option during automatic configuration at Snap, however if you have reset your Fritz it will have enabled itself again, when customers call us we can see how long they have been authenticated for, its not uncommon to see customers logged in for months without re-authenticating/re-syncing!

is your router re-syning DSL? or is it re-authenticating? PM us your username and we can take a look, its really 99% likely that its either this or an alarm grabber.

(we have also asked AVM why this option is enabled by default, and if they can remove it for the NZ version, and for interest sake why its there at all! - its more than likely for time based DSL rates which are not common at all in NZ)
