Hi,

I've recently switched from ADSL/analog phone line (Fyx/Telecom) to Snap and had a few issues along the way.

The key issue is that I am basically getting ADSL speed with a slightly faster upload (1400). Looking at the spectrum I could see a hole at the bottom, in the middle and nothing on the right half. Plugging an analog phone in I still get a (busy) dialtone. Can't post screen shots as the line is now dead and I didn't keep a copy (silly me).

Could the slow speed be related to a misconfiguration of some sorts that prevents the modem to use the frequencies occupied by the analog phone line? I was surprised that for almost a week they had VDSL and the analog phone active on the line at the same time and was expecting better performance as soon as they turned off the analog phone. Is it normal to get a busy dialtone on an analog phone on a VDSL line?

Yesterday evening I rang the support (again), Chorus checked the line and said it was a bad one. Shortly after the line went dead and since the modem can't connect (doesn't even start trining or synchronising) any more. The phone still gives me the busy dialtone.

I have
- reset the FritzBox
- reset the FritzBox to factory defaults and re-configured everything
- tried another cable
- tried another end point
- tried another FritzBox with 2 different cables
- tried with and without filters (no master filter installed)

The internal wiring goes through another jack (which I have now bridged), but there's nothing else (alarm, etc.) on it.

I found another post here from John who is located physically close to me and he's got pretty decent speeds, so I was expecting an improvement over ADSL speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

No VDSL master filter installed is just a FAIL to start with unless you have a dedicated xDSL jack point and all other wiring is isolated from that jack point

There is nothing else on the line, so what difference would a master filter make?

Termination point <--> internal wire <--> jack <--> FritzBox

A master filter or dedicated jackpoint is mandatory for VDSL2. It is not optional.

The fact you don't have a POTS line is about as relevent as what you had for dinner last light. Read the links in the post above if you don't understand why this is important.

POTS and xDSL don't use the same frequencies. The fact a POTS line was still active is also once again about as relevent as what you had for dinner last light..

The only difference between having a dedicated jack and my current configuration is a few meters of cable that I could spare. I mean I don't mind putting a single dedicated jack in but I don't understand how this is going to improve the situation other than marginally.

So you have no other phone jacks at all connected to the line? even if there is nothing in them? You have checked the internal wiring isn't running to anything else, jacks that might have been there before but aren't there now etc?

You would only not need a master splitter if the line coming in from the ETP has been wired directly to a single jack and nothing else at all. This is highly unlikely unless you've done this yourself, and used proper connecting equipment (3M gel splicers/patch panel with cat5e/other high grade twisted pair)

Best solution as stated is to get a master filter, and get someone to check your line distance to approximate what you should be receiving.

That is correct. There was one other jack in the line (between the ETP and the jack that the modem is plugged in) but I bridged it soldering the cables. This might not be perfect, but should be close.

The internal wiring looks very much like Cat5. Can't see any printing on the cable itself, but it looks very much like a proper network cable.

I'll see if I can get a direct connection between the ETP and the modem in on the weekend and if that makes a difference. That is if the line is back connecting at all by then.

I wired fresh CAT5E straight from the ETP to the fritzbox, even connected it with a RJ45 on the end because that's what the fritzbox takes for its DSL port. I'm unsure how advisable it is to straight solder the phone lines but i would prefer the standard gel splicing due to the protection from moisture and not getting dry solder joints. These are 25 cents each from ideal electrical.

Have you checked your location? Someone can live nearby to where you are and be on a totally different cabinet or exchange. A friend used to live in a house that was one of of 5 on the street that weren't covered by the cabinets on either side of him, and the line went directly to the exchange instead.

Can you explain what you mean by this?

I disconnected the jack point competly and soldered wire 1 from the incoming cable to wire 1 of the outgoing cable and the same with the second wire.
Basically the connection is as before, only the the jack is now not connected to anything any more and the wires are soldered instead of spliced together.

That's exactly the plan.

The soldering was done well and its shrink wrapped, so I don't expect moisture issued (also because it's inside the house).
