Hi There Everyone

looking at a new provider for internet as the current Vodafone plan does not meet our needs for the price (Currently on 100gb bundled with sky - $170ish). We are interested in the Orcon Genius Adsl unlimited plan but just want to know if anyone else has this plan in Petone or Lower Hutt and what kinds of Speeds they get both on and off peak

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

When you use the word "speed" there are actually two parts to it. Phyisical sync speed, and actual ISP throughput.

ISP throughput won't really change no matter where in NZ you are. If you want to see what other people think of Orcon there are plenty of other threads in this forum discussing them. Based upon what most people are saying about them at present it's safe to say they're not flavour of the month.

The biggest variables are the DSL sync speed which is dictated by the wiring within your premises and your distance from the exchange or cabinet. This variable doesn't exist on UFB.

Out of curiosity is there any reason why you're not moving to UFB?

unlimited is for heavy users rather than users who expect a consistent performance, and so asking about the performance probably means that performance is significant enough an issue that you should choose a non unlimited plan.

Hi guys

We are after more data and so an unlimited plan seems to suit. We have ufb available to our street but Orcon ties you in and you cannot take the ufb to another place you have to stay at the existing plan for at least 12 months at the existing address ( other fibre providers do not have enough data for reasonable price )

sbiddle - bandwidth speed

johnr - more data and faster speeds currently get 7.6 mb/s and .7 up

when we first moved in our internet did not work and so Vodafone sent around a tech who removed the master filter, would the removal of this decrease the speed as well as having an alarm ( not connected )

A master filter should be mandatory for all xDSL installs. Removing it would have statistically reduced your xDSL sync speeds.

If the alarm is connected to the POTS line (even if you fon't pay for monitoring it can still dial out) a master filter is mandatory.

As for Orcon speeds I'll refer you back to the recent posts on here and let you form your own judgement.

Master filter could of been removed as you only have a single jack point, Please post modem line stats

If you have a house alarm and it's not monitored then make sure it's not connected to the house wiring in anyway at all

I have fiber in petone with orcon unlimited data. I am happy with speed, my internet tv-youtube going smoothly without any delay At this moment I done speed test, ping 14 download 25.28 upload 8.24 hope this will help. I am on 30mps plan.

Hi everyone

I Have signed up to Telecoms Vdsl trial, they are switching me to adsl and then upgrading it to vdsl, so that we do not have to wait as long to have internet. They are guaranteeing 15mb/s down and 5 mb/s up and if it is under we will be reverted back to adsl.

i would change it to "Wellington region" or "Lower Hutt" but i assume you cannot edit titles

When viewed from Auckland, Petone is 99.9% in Wellington :-)

Personally, if UFB is available on your street I'd say go for it, we're pretty good when it comes to change of addresses (either switching you to one of our UFB, VDSL or ADSL plans at your new address), the UFB equipment does stay at the address all set for the next person that moves in. If you wish flick me a direct message with a contact number, and the address and I'll get somebody to get hold of you to discuss the options with you. 100mbit UFB is rather drool-worthy.

I called up the sales team today to sign up to UFB but since we have a copper line running overhead unable to sign up to ufb, so the next best thing was vdsl. Hopefully it works out.

Ah that's not too fun, fingers crossed!
