Hi

I was consistently getting 1000 - 1500 kbps overnight, last 3 nights this has dropped to 300-400 kbps

Just wondering if they have started throttling data for some users?

Cheers

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

I've noticed one time it was a bit slow. I guess they hit their traffic limits.

Another thing I noticed -- I scheduled some downloads to occur between 1am and 06:45am -- but, I still get charged for 2 or 3 gig of data. I checked with my netlimiter to see download activity and it is definitely only downloading between those times.

I've tried playing around with the times a bit and I was charged up to 5 gig data when downloads are limited between 1am/7am. Changing to 6:45am helped but still get charged 2 or 3gig.

I remember reading somewhere on their site that you need to allow 15min either side for the free period to 'kick in'.  I generally start my downloads at 1:15am and finish at 6:45.

I don't like the hassle of having to run a different scheduling program for utorrent (as the built in schedules only does 1hr blocks) so I just allow for the fact that I may be charged an additional 20-40gb a month as non free data.

NetLimiter allows you to do bandwidth throttling down to the minute if you want an alternative solution.

Thanks, I used netlimiter in the past, but now I only buy the addon plan so I can get the free night time data, I rarely run out of day time data.

I'm interested if anyone else who goes through A LOT of night time data has noticed any changes, or getting an official comment from snap.

It's probably just congestion/contention due to more people making use of the un-metered period for downloads.

I have not noticed any slow downs with Snap, either off peak, peak or free data time.

If I want to download something, it will always hit 3.8-4MBps any time of the day.

In saying that I never reach even half of my monthly 250GB cap.

Hi,

No issues at all at this end, there is still a significant amount of free bandwidth at that time of night - and we are not shaping anyone, and yes some people do use a significant amount of data at those times (some in the TB's!)

Cheers,
TheRalph

Hi,

Thanks for the reply Ralph, I also was in touch with snap prior to reading your reply, and they said the same thing. No night time rate limiting for us heavy users :)
