So I'm thinking about leaving Vodafone cable as I'm using more the 150GB a month and I'm not happy with what its costing me compared to what I can get with VDSL.

My question though is where does the termination happen in the street, is it at the local exchange or is it the Telecom (chorus?) cabinet in the street?

Reason I ask is I know that the speeds are affected by distance and I have a cabinet across the road but the exchange is miles away.

Is there a minimum speed that snap will guarantee? If the speed is crap after install can I cancel straight away and not be held to the contract?

I know I could ask snap but I like it here :-)

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

It should be the cabinet. I think the only time it might be the exchange is when the ISP runs LLU equipment which I believe goes in the exchange. I don't believe snap do this though.

I very much doubt they will guarantee any speeds as this is nearly impossible to do on DSL. But.. given that wiring is now free and if your cabinet is across the street as you say, then I would say you'll have few worries.

I've been on snap VDSL for a while now and am very satisified. It's not always completely smooth sailing and I'll switch to UFB when I can, but until then very happy with it.

Maybe find a provider that doesn't lock you into contracts ;)

Assuming you're connected to the cabinet and it's a whisper cabinet of course, then itll be fine.

Snap will do a pre-qual on your line and be able to ascertain the local loop distance. From this they will decide whether to provision VDSL for you. The maximum attenuation for Chorus is 10.8dB. This means copper loop can be around 1km.

So basically just ring Snap and get them to pre-qual your line before signing up.

Edit: They will be able to tell you some download and upload speeds in this process to but don't be deterred by these if you think they sound low. They are very very conservative with these estimates.

Not really an option as I don't presently have a copper line into my house.

I've left this for a while but am now hitting my cap sooner each month as have now added Spotify and using Hulu a lot more.

Had a look at the Chorus map and it seems that the cabinet across the road is used for VDSL to my address so I think the speed should be decent enough.

Now need to talk to Vodafone to see if they can swap me to a VDSL plan and how much that would cost vs going to another provider (I think Snap will install for free) and pay whatever to get out of my Vodafone contract (forced into 12 month contract when they changed the pricing recently).

Once I know the costs I can weigh that up against the extra I am paying in overage costs per month and see if its worth the change.

Just seems crazy to me that I can get 400GB cap on Vodafone VDSL but only 150GB on cable.

Good point, it doesn't actually say what it is on the site - well not from what I can see.

Looks like I'm moving on. Its a shame as I've been a cable customer for many years now but its just not worth the extra cost anymore.
