So i switched over to Snap VDSL with VOIP from Orcon Genius ADSL and purchased a Fritz 7390.

I rewired my main terminal with Cat5e and have only a single phone jack in the house which the Fritzbox connects to.  As i am 383m away from my exchange i have not needed to install a splitter at the outside TP.

The initial irk i had was when a Chorus tech called me up and said that he needed to check my setup at home to verify all was working, seems someone at SNAP forgot to add that info to the forms that were sent out to initially about the setup process.  So ok, fine sorted and vola, functioning VDSL at some quite respectable rates:

                                                      Receive Direction     Send Direction
Max. DSLAM throughput kbit/s                70000                10360
Min. DSLAM throughput  kbit/s                360                   360
Attainable throughput    kbit/s                42692                12416
Current throughput        kbit/s                42536               10352
Latency                                                8 ms                 8 ms
Bitswap                                                on                     on
Impulse Noise Protection                        0.0                   0.8
Signal-to-noise ratio   dB                       13                     15
Line attenuation         dB                       11                     102
Carrier record                                        A43                  A43
Profile        8b

What is really starting to anger me is the fact that at completely random times the phone will ring with a call from an unknown number, pick up the phone and nothing is there.

its not a problem when im home since i've tied my S3 into the home calling but when i get phone calls from midnight to 5am and have to start unplugging my phone, then there is a problem.

I saw a previous thread in these forums about an identical issue but there was no conclusion to it.  SNAP have apparently changed me to their new VOIP system but:

=|04.07.2013 23:58 | Unknown | unknown | Fixed line network | 00:00
=|04.07.2013 13:52 | Unknown | unknown | Fixed line network | 00:00
=|04.07.2013 09:10 | Unknown | unknown | Fixed line network | 00:00
=|04.07.2013 08:44 | Unknown | unknown | Fixed line network | 00:00

Does anyone here have a solution or know of a way that this can be dealt with?  I cannot block hidden numbers as people call me that have hidden numbers.

See this thread re: phantom calls on the Fritzbox
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=90&topicid=119456

Basically you need to edit the config and remove the open port 5060.

Snap needs to fix this on the Fritz unit's they are shipping imo!

I don't think we ever heard back from that to whether the calls were coming from the Snap network or just anonymous SIP calls.
I realise the Fritz has these port forwards in there for a reason but wouldn't it be a good idea to set up firewall rules stopping traffic from anywhere that isn't Snap's proxy?

We get the odd 'phantom call' on 2Talk but they aren't random SIP calls. They come from the 2Talk network and therefore from upstream providers. People just have these bots dialling all the time. My guess is they are bots looking for insecure PABX's (dialling out via DISA's etc) not so much SIP attacks.

Hi, I'm the one who had the fault on the original thread.

So, interestingly enough I wasn't able to block port 5060 on the Fritzbox. While I was on ADSL I still had the issues, however I'm now on UFB and as of the day I had UFB installed I haven't had any anonymous calls.

Pure speculation, but maybe Snap filters port 5060 VoIP traffic on UFB connections but not DSL?

I removed the port forwarding details out of the cfg file and tested it out today and the fritzbox appears to add the removed information straight back into the cfg file again so /shrug about what can be done on the user end to fix this issue.

Hi All,

Sorry for the delay on this issue.

We have resolved this some time ago for all new connections, so CcMaN when your Fritz went onto UFB our network via auto configuration (TR69) sent out the the new settings to update the configuration that caused this issue.

For existing Fritz box's we have been through a large amount testing with both models we support and all the firmware that our customers are running. We are pushing out updates to resolve this now, some very early boxes were not automatically configured so they will need to be manually updated, and our team is working through these (generally older than 3 years)

Just to confirm we don't block any ports on our network.

If you are still getting ghost phonecall's to your Fritz please either let our support desk know, or PM us. The blank phone calls were direct to the Fritz box, and not through our voice network. (as I think you pointed out when they stopped with your firewall modification!)

Thanks,
TheRalph

Interestingly our incomming calls died last night.. invalid number advisory

Called the HD after a reboot to find yep, the backdoor admin login settings had gone west so I missed the upgrade push.

As a result had to re-give access and the SIP gateway settings where changed.. re-register and phone working fine again. I'm picking it was related to these changes as he said it was a migration this month :)
