I have had a recent VDSL2 install and the speeds are below what i expected. My question is are these the sort of speeds you guys would have expected?.

- I live 550 meters away from the Fendalton exchange in CHCH (I know this doesn't necessarily mean the run of cable is 550m)
- I have a new 15meter length of Cat5e cable to my dedicated jack point.
- When originally installed was wired incorrectly and was only getting 8 down 7 up but have since resurrected that with my new cat5e run.

Before I start playing around with the fritz i just wanted someone else to confirm this is what i should have expected.

Here are some of my Fritz screenshots:

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

That signal graph is horrible. If the cable run is anywhere near 550m (and your attenuation reading suggests it is), I would have thought you'd get around double that downstream. You have a master splitter & all that, right?

Yep, Master filter installed behind the dedicated jack point. I knew something looked fishy there

When you say behind, how do you mean?

The line should enter your house at the ETP, then enter the splitter, with the DSL split off to it's jackpoint and <everything else> off the other pair. Is that how it is?

No, the line runs to the dedicated jack point (where filter is), then the rest of the jackpoints are fed from the filter? if that makes sense.

As long as there is nothing connected to the line between where it enters the house, and the splitter, I imagine it should be OK, though others would be better suited to answer that specifically.

This is what the chorus tech did, Although I'm sure he had no clue. All other jacks are definitely connected to the phone side of the filter.

What else could cause such a horrible signal graph?

Whatever you do, don't play around with the SNR of the Fritz!Box on your connection, it'll only cause problems. I'd say it's likely due to the distance from the cabinet/exchange. The equipment might be 550m away but there might be also 800m of cable heading there (it doesn't always take the most direct route) - I've seen it in the past where the cabinet was 400m away from a customers place but the cable actually circled the block meaning it was close to 900m before it reached there.

Would that not mean my attenuation would be higher though?

My line length is 900m according to chorus, its 600m by road. and i get 32-38mbps depending on weather (it changes a lot when its wet, chorus tech told me this is normal, i thought it wasnt). And my quoted atten figure is the same as his, but my graphs are far healthier.
This line definitely has something wrong with it imo.

I would agree, are you also using the Fritz!Box? It could also be the fact he's still going through DLM.

Attenuation is merely measuring the electrical property of the copper cable indicating distance.

SNR and the bitloading graph are showing the ability of your copper cable to carry a DSL signal at a particular frequency.

anyone think about actual proclaim vdsl filter that telecom maybe using is infact not complaint with vdsl. I had previously with my adsl a filter and on label it said it was vdsl2 complaint but when I tempted to use that filter I found line performance was horrid . I got one from ulteranative supplier making sure it was vdsl2 complaint one. Sure enough my line perfomance is at simliar distance to his person and im getting 33meg/10meg here so just thought to throw to all that replying here
