Ok so I have got another 5 days to complete the DLM but should I expect much improvement between profiles. I am connecting between 37mbit and 40mbit. But was told I should get at least 50 closer to 60 when a test was done on my line by Snap.

We had Chorus around to do the initial set up and of course they did not want to put in a new jack, their readings came back fine, so they disconnected about 3 jackpoints and connected up a filter in the office which connects to the Fritz!Box 7390.

Going by some of the examples post on these forums, I did expect the above speeds as the cabinet is at the end of my street less than 200 meters away.

Really don't know what is up with the line attenuation on the upstream.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

That is a VERY clean line! I expect you will be put onto a 17a profile as you are under the attenuation threshold by the looks. This will boost your speed quite a bit.

Another thing is that sync speed tends to increase slightly during the first couple of weeks, so I'd do a weekly 5min power off and on again to see if things improve.

Also, a lot of people are seeing lower speeds (plus other issues) with the latest .51 Fritz firmware. I'd recommend downgrading to .22. See this post for details.

Thanks for the quick late night reply Sam.

I thought I may be eligible for the 17a profile but didn't know if I knew what i was talking about :-P

I'll have a look at the firmware also, cheers mate.

Personally I found I started off with a very low sync speed and it almost doubled in the first couple of weeks, it's a waiting game until the DSLAM goes "Hey, you can haz these speeds!" but yes, I've heard some bad things going on with the latest Fritz!Box firmware so might be worth downgrading it or checking out the VDSL tuning page which is more Fritz! specific.

No problemo! :)

Feel free to post in the VDSL Tuning thread, there is a lot of collective knowledge about getting the best out of your line in there!

My understanding is this actually screws up the DLM and might net you a lower speed profile... I'd not do it

Nope, there are lots of documented examples of this making a big positive difference.  The only issue you'll have with this kind of thing is if you power off / resync multiple times a day which may make DLM consider your line unstable.  However, anything up to 3 times a day should be fine.

Hi Guys

As SamF said I was switched to the 17a profile and I am now very happy. Probably happier than most Snap customers as I won this through a competition at TechEd and don't have to pay for it . Still not sure what it up with all the errors, is that expected?

When I first received the Fritz box I did a factory reset and rang up Snap and asked for the Vdsl settings before even connecting to the internet but forgot to ask for the voip settings . They set up the voip for me the next day, I tried to get the DECT working but found out it doesn't work with Uniden phones After that I did a power cycle on the unit after the recommendation of SamF.

Here is my speedtest adventure from ADSL to VDSL2.

Those errors should be OK I think. I wee bit higher than ideal, but I've run for extended period with higher error rates. Just keep an eye on the CRC error rates.

(Aww so you're the one who won my prize at tech ed :P Actually I was hoping they would give away free monthly data again, but they instead did the draw. Congrats anyway, nice prize, nice speeds, Enjoy!)

Cheers man, thanks

Just replaced the nasty ELTO multi box with a slightly better Phillips filtered multi box and the errors have reduced quite a lot. Not sure if it was just the restart or the multibox but I'm even happier. Had restarted before this with no change to the errors. So I would stay away from Elto multi boxes may be.
