Hi Guys,

Have a Draytek Vigor120 modem

Doesn't matter whether cabled or wireless

have tried rebooting and always same sync rate

have spoke to Orcon and they said they did some back end changes but ofcourse it is still the same

Am experiencing extremely slow sync on Orcon@Home unlimited plan....

have confirmed with Orcon that I am on the LLU network. Would switching to the Telecom Wholesale Network improve anything?I am a couple of km's away from the CBD in christchurch

Cheers,
Ryan

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

From what I have read from sbiddle's blogs on this site, switching would make a large difference, but wait for someone more experienced than me to reply :)

A possible explanation is midspan injection being on ULL gear in a cabinetised area, however don't jump to conclusions, read the links in the post above, answer the questions, and see what comes back.

Log a ticket with the helpdesk. It could be possible mid point injection, but since the Chch MSANS are fairly newly installed its unlikley.

If it helps - we only just got internet.

But when Chorus techs came out to hook up our internet we got DSL sync but no connection and no dial tone on the phone.

Either way the DSL sync was reporting ~7-8 Mbps sync rate and then they changed some things to get it working like it is and its dropped to the 2-3 Mbps sync rate.

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above
Have done a isolation test and seen no improvements. There is no master filter installed.

Looking at your account, you are correctly placed on LLU equipment.

The sync speed you are getting is fairly bad for the area, so I would suggest either looking at your internal wiring (master splitter install) or logging a fault with Orcon to get your line checked out.

Thanks for the reply,

Yeah we got a bump up to 6Mbps from something done on your end so thats great.
I think they are testing us on the Telecom wholesale network because my SNR has jumped to 12?

I've picked up a master filter and will install it at the first jack coming into the house today and see how we get on.

On the Telecom network was back to 2Mbps. upon installing the master filter this instantly jumped to 4.3 Mbps.

I wonder if going back to whatever the settings were that gave us 6Mbps before will improve much with the master filter.
