Howdy all,

I currently get 15500 kbps down and 900 kbps up on my ADSL2 router, with the PC recieving between 10000 and 13000 kbps through ethernet. I am looking at getting VDSL which I am told should give me between 18000 and 29000 kbps down in this area (though the higher number is expected due to my sync speed on ADSL2).

My question to any gamers on Snap! VDSL is has the speed increased caused a noticeable drop in lag in online gaming? Particularly things like MMOs since dodging AoE mechanics has been my kryptonite on my current connection. If some gamers can take the time to jot down their experiences since moving to VDSL I would greatly appreciate it.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

most snap adsl connections are interleaving off by default, which would give a slightly.. lower latency. (depends on what DLM profile you end up with)

what games exactly are we referring to? can give you a few pings to them.

aside from you getting stuck on an 8ms DLM profile, your latency wont change much, what will change is the ability to get upload congestion as easily..

adsl line stats? do you have a master filter installed currently?

Difference in ping times between ADSL and VDSL isn't much what so ever, You still use the same piece of copper to connect. Most of the time the ISP has better routing or equipment for VDSL. In the ideal world, No, Not at all.

I used to get 12ms pings to trademe. Today i on VDSL i get 19. So who knows.

To my knowledge the splitter is fine; we had a lot of issues when on Telecom who didn't want to know about it, when we swapped to Snap they called Chorus and they found a short in our cabinet port but they checked all the wiring between the router and the cabinet as well (even replacing the master jack port thing). Our white ADSL splitter thing is under a year old as is the router.

Unfortunately the server for the MMO I am currently on doesn't accept ping commands, and the one I will be playing isn't out yet (Wildstar). I was really looking for subjective feedback because there isn't really any solid way to get objective feedback

simply put, your not gonna notice much difference, if its just you on the line and your pretty careful about torrenting, uploading, downloading while playing..

Wildstar, is one i have not looked at, so i cant directly comment on it.

a master filter, is a filter generally black, installed in the ETP, allocating a single jackpoint to your DSL connection.

if you have a master filter/central filter, a inline filter is not needed which if im understanding your description correctly is what the white filter is.

@op, as a gamer, i dont regret being on snap, nor being on vdsl, they both go great hand in hand. im very picky about lag, or latency and notice jitter like a bat.

I get 168 to ABC.com, 43 to NBC.com, Trademe has just jumped for me. ISP side so not my line in the question.

trademe randomly alternates between wellington and auckland, seemingly not related to which is closer. ping times from auckland to wellington are about 7 msec.

akld ip: 202.162.73.2
wgtn ip: 202.162.72.2

ping for me seems worse than normal to wellington, it seems to be going via fx, which i can't remember from the past. so 7 msec additional, via normal routes from akld to wgtn, 10 msec via fx. (if coming from akld)

fwiw, nzherald can be a bit random like that too. as far as good nz test sites go maybe it's better to use something like www.auckland.ac.nz which isn't likely to start bouncing between cities.

now that telstraclear isn't being used there should be less cogent routes so things should be better in general. even with ufb you're going to still be at the mercy of US traffic going via California, which has a high amount of fibre cuts, congestion issues, peering disagreements etc. it's also the way that most asia traffic comes in and a large amount of ddos traffic comes from those areas, but a lot of the continous issues have been due to netflix in the US.

ahh i've mostly seen ntt and peering exchanges. level3 is kind of cool because they tend to do cold potato routing, whereas ntt tend to do hot potato routing - ntt will offload the traffic as soon as it can whereas level3 will keep it on their network.

www.anandtech.com is an example of a cogent-connected host, and ntt offload to cogent straight away, so you have higher chance of issues...

Cheers for the replies people. I know about ping and the like, but sometimes faster connections can overcome some of the issues you thought was ping ^^

In summary it seems the consensus is that it won't make much difference so I'll downgrade it to a "nice to have" and get it when I have to much excess cash.
