I normally, and have been getting for the last 2 months, 30+Mbps on my VDSL2 connection.

Last night, the net dropped out and went down to 24mbps. Modem restart and it goes back to 33mbps.

less than 30 minutes later, back down to 24mbps.
Stable for the night, then today I notice the speed quite slow from work, back down to 24mbps.

Restart modem and it goes back to 30+mbps.

What the hell is going on here? and why all of a sudden? I've not had issues the whole time I've been with them, then all of a sudden?

Worth noting, when I restart, my SNR reads 11-12.

when it drops to 24mbps, I see 17-18

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

interesting thing i note here, as you have also pointed out, your snr is going high.

on the standard vdsl profiles, with chorus gear you will train at 12db for whatever reason your line is getting noisy, and resyncing higher.

i see about a 5mbit gain every 2db dropped off the snr, given your running a 8b line, your speed loose lines up with the snr increase there abouts.

take it your wirings up to scratch?

could just be crosstalk...

Either wiring or crosstalk.. If it's crosstalk you can join the growing list of people who have posted on here lately who are experiencing this issue.

I can only assume that my wiring is fine. I've not had issues for the last 2 years I've lived here, and the last 2 months since I signed up for VDSL.

Today it's stable again at 34mbps, so I'm guessing maybe crosstalk...

Also took the opportunity while my modem was down to do a firmware upgrade. Whether this has had any effect I have no idea, but I'll keep monitoring

Does this imply that your wiring was not modified/upgraded at the time of your VDSL install (master filter etc.)?

Chorus came and installed a new point for the VDSL side of things (and also modified the first jack point in the house). You'll have to excuse my ignorance, I'm not up to speed with the lingo of what they did while here.

But regardless, it has been find for the last two months, only started playing up the last couple of days

Not that I'm aware of, but then I don't really know the neighbours.

Internet dropped again just now. Dropped to 24mbps, but heres the kicker, the SNR is still 12?!??! though loop att. is 18?

It's dropped again, damn it!

I've logged a ticket with Snap!, they said they "will monitor my line for 24 hours" to see if they can see any issues.

I can see this is going to be painful....

thats also my worry...

might do a door knock to find if a neighbour has had VDSL2 installed recently...

normally 2 "unexplainable" reboots on DLM1 in a day is enough to loose it.

a door knocking sounds interesting, find out the provider while your at it, little kitty has one in mind already...

I guess my only other question is, how many neighbours to I ask?

I live in an apartment complex (side by side, stacked). We have approx 40-45 odd people here, so how far along do I go?

The attenuation figure shouldn't change significantly with time - it should be fairly stable, even if there is varying amounts of noise on the line.

If it is moving by more than 1dB, the most probable cause is a physical line issue like a bad joint somewhere.

 Oh dear :(

This is typical too... I was only asking about wiring and maintenance a couple of weeks ago.
