I had a VDSL install completed yesterday at my home, I watched the tech from Chorus do a very thorough job.

I immediately tested the line and it was great initially, with a slight improvement from my ADSL Down speed  and the UP was way higher.

He stated it could take 10 days for the VDSL to actually be completed, however since yesterday my speeds are dropping badly and my latency is brutal (BF4 servers showing pings of 500+).

I don't expect everything to work straight off the bat but my down speed sits at around 0.9Mbps currently. Really, should my connection speeds take this much of a hit switching over to VDSL?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

PM me your account details and I'll take a look, if you could PM or post a speedtest from speedtest.orcon.net.nz that would be good too. I have to say the fact that you state your VDSL sync rate was only slightly better than ADSL isn't a good sign, it probably means distance and/or line quality is an issue.

Thanks for the reply Fire.

Last night my down sat around 1M or less on speedtest and my Up was around 2. Ping was over 100.( Srry didn't copy that one).

This morning its 'better' (than last night I mean).

why are you testing to a sydney server?

are you testing over wifi? you should try connecting via an Ethernet cable

because your modem stats look fine as you are connected at 45mbps and have a relatively low attenuation figure. to a speed test server in nz i wouldn't expect you to have a ping higher than about 25.

Sydney isn't on our network, can you test to speedtest.orcon.net please and post the result. Clearly your line rate is a lot better than is possible with ADSL but the throughput you will get to international sites can't be guaranteed. As above, WiFi does not support the throughput the line is capable of so you need to test when cable connected to see what VDSL is capable of.

Looks like the VDSL is working right off the bat here.

Your modem sync stats show a rock solid connection syncing at 45Mbps down and 10Mbps up.

You need to test to a local speedtest server, not something in Australia. You also need to use Ethernet as WiFi is not suitable for fault finding and is merely a complementary solution compared to Ethernet, it is not a replacement. In many urban areas 2.4Ghz WiFi is now on the verge of being totally unusable due to interference and noise floor.

If you're not getting speeds near this it shows either a) a problem with your PC or internal network or b) something fundamentally wrong with Orcon. My money would be on a)

Connections to Sydney are notoriously slow and variable. Use the Orcon speedtest or speedtest.net connected to a local server.

It looks like its a WiFi issue. Basically its my fault, I should have asked the Chorus tech to install the Modem upstairs so I can go straight Ethernet, but I was having a hectic day and was not thinking. I assumed the WiFi strength would be decent enough through a wooden house, looks like I am losing 60% signal. I also didn't realise that you cant just move the modem like you can with genius to another phone extension *facepalm*.

My main PC I use for downloading and gaming is upstairs, looks like the Netcom power NF4V isnt as grunty as the old Genius black box?

I moved Netcom channel to 1, changed the basement modem to another channel also and disconnected WiFi devices on the 2.4GHz and saw a decent improvement but its nowhere fast as the laptop tests sitting next to the Netcom modem. (I get 30~ 40Mbs Down!).

@Fire : Is it possible to ask the nice people at Orcon and Chorus to rebook a tech to rewire that connection upstairs? I would accept rewiring charges if need be.

Thanks again for all the responses gentlemen

Thanks for posting this, yes we can do that assuming you don't want to run an ethernet cable from modem to pc - that would achieve the same for your pc?? Let me know what you think.

Hey Fire, thanks for that. I'd love to run an Ethernet upstairs, however its a bit of journey for that cable route.

Probably easier to just ask Chorus to run that cable straight up the side of the house. Should I arrange that with your support team/Chorus or can you guys do that and send me a date for that?

BTW......moot point on that NF4V:

I ran inSSIDer earler today and compared the signal strength from the black genius ADSL modem that sits in the basement against the Netcomm which is only one floor below me. Quite interesting:

The basement Genius 'Bespoke Wireless' has slightly better strength that the NF4V ('Orcon wireless'), which is surprising as it sits one floor below it!

Also I have the NF4V on channel 1, but its showing here as being on 1 + 5?

You would think being 2 floors down it would be weaker, wondering just how much power that Netcomm can actually put out?

Is your Genius sat flat on its back or upright on its stand?

We can place a wiring order for you, I'll PM you about it.

@Fire - Modem is upright on the stand/base. I did consider the RF distrubtion/propagation might be from the 'sides', but will go and try placing it flat - worth a go.

Thanks yes go ahead and PM me for that re wiring order as well.

@WrEK - Yep, indeed it is, cheers :)

Hmm - I seem to get best distance perpendicular from the front face so mine is on its stand with the front facing the longest distance across the house. Be aware that is your house has been extended at all, the original exterior wall may have insulation in it that isn't good for WiFi distance through it...

Will PM you tomorrow re the wiring order...
