Hi all,

I have looked thru a million pages here and cannot easily find anything on this, so forgive me if this has been asked already.

I am with Slingshot and I will be upgrading to VDSL on Friday (I hope, as this is the date I was advised). Out of curiosity I asked them what sort of speeds I could expect. Now I know that this is dependent on a number of different factors (distance from exchange, cable condition, attenuation, mother-in-law's birthday divided by the number of nieces and then multiplied by the number of grandkids under the age of 5, etc). I was told my downstream attenuation is 8.5dbM, and I am approx 850m from the cabinet, and I could expect speeds of around 16mb/s.

This is barely faster than the 12.9mb/s I get on Slingshot's ADSL!!!

According to the figures entered in this link (http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php) I could expect up to 45mb/s.

Could I really expect to see speeds as *bad* as 16mb/s?

Cheers.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

At 850m you'd be pretty much at the upper limit for instal. That speed estimate may be based on what nearby properties are getting, so may not be too far off the mark, but from previous postings, estimates tend to be under not over. You'll get a much better upload though.

8.5db, ild put you in the 30~40/10 mark. as you have rightfully pointed out, it is dependent on so many factors, which make it a bit harder to predict than ADSL.

Thanks so much guys. I guess I will have to wait until the install happens, and then a further 10 days before I know for sure...

Cheers

You've hit the nail on the head really with this ;-)

I heard a rumor that it may also have something to do with the number of revolutions of a DeWalt drill using a 3/8" bit at maximum speed, but I can't confirm that for sure. Tried to Google it but...

Well the VDSL was installed yesterday, and after spending a half hour with SS Tech Support deleting and adding profiles on the modem (was set up for ADSL), we finally got it going.

The Chorus chappie got speeds of 35/10, which makes me happy - was faster than I thought I would get. We shall now wait for 10 days and see what profile we settle on and what our final speeds will be...

Not bad. Glad my prediction lined up :)

Enjoy your new found speed. Try not to reboot the.modem. hopefully that slingshot modem stays stable for you.

Your prediction was spot on! laughing

I have upgraded the software to the latest and I will see how the modem performs over the next month or so.

Now to watch a movie or two on Netflix so we can see how much better VDSL is lol. My ADSL was always buffering - a bit like the Vodafone ad on tv...

Cheers

Well the life of the SS modem was shortlived. It started locking up on Sunday night and would not load up websites. The only way out of it was to reboot it. SS CS said the link was up and everything was fine as far as they were concerned.

I bought a new ASUS N66U and connected it last night. Seems to be going fine, but I made the stability adjustment to 5db as mentioned by one of the guys (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=81&topicid=136811&page_no=14). When laptop was connected via Ethernet I went from 21Mbs to 42Mbs; however when I went wireless and was sitting 2ft away from the modem it went back down to 23Mbs. Not sure why. The laptop I am using is an ASUS UX31E ultrathin.

Any ideas?

I also seem to have a bit of an issue when logging in to this modem in that I often cannot reach the 192.168.1.1 Admin page, even if I am connected via Ethernet. I need to reboot and that solves it. Again, not sure what is going on there.

you shouldnt tinker with your snr without knowing what your doing.

as for your wireless. to be expected, never expect wireless to max out, been doing some extensive testing on my line recently which wifi performance has come into it. there is alot of APs around me, so a fair bit of interference.

ill push 60mbit throughput one day, and the next it will be as low as 20mbit in the same position.

Lucky people.

That's been mostly what I've been getting, and HUGE pings and packet loss to the routers gateway if it even gets close that, I guess you call it "speed*".
Except this morning where I got 20mb/s down, 10 up for a couple of hours. Multiple routers, all the same thing - garbage.

I don't regret my decision in any way, shape, or form! But I both rue and lament it, and as soon as the ten days are up, hopefully going back to my ADSL. Probably with another provider at this point :(

* compared to dial up I guess.

Rolling back to ADSL makes complete sense.
But why do you want to change providers? - they all use the same Chorus copper lines.

i am with slingshot and have had vdsl for 2 days now - went from 14/1 on adsl2 to 18/7 on vdsl

so marginal download improvement - but solid upload improvement

but i am right at the limit distance wise ie. est @ 950 odd metres so it was always going to be marginal

that said connection seems pretty stable so far, youtube doesn't stop/buffer mid-stream anymore, skygo stream seems to run longer without issue and filehost dl's max at 2.2 MB/s as opposed to 1.4 MB/sec

so yeah given it's the same price, i am actually ok with this improvement, esp as ufb is 2 years away in my our neck of the woods

while ymmv - my 2c - worth a crack even if your are at the outer limits and no doubt a good mid-term option if ufb is a while away in your patch

Was this tested over wireless or wired ethernet to your router?
