I recently had ufb installed and was wondering does the modem automatically update settings ? the modem is Netcomm NF4V the modem was sent out for Vdsl then the upgrade happened shortly after that the installer only turned it off and on and it worked (he told me they only deal with the inside optical box no further ) why i ask is because the Vdsl light still flashes like it searching connection. and being an avid gamer i was mostly disappointed to see my latency only drop from 20ms (copper) to 18-19ms fibre orcon speed test.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

There isn't a VDSL connection, only the WAN ethernet connection to the ONT so yes the VDSL light will flash.

Yes it works out which connection to use :-)

Your drop in ping is measured to where?

i use the orcon speed test and and windows tracert thou the tracert now always gives three stars for the coneection from modem to cabinet then pings 18-19 just like the orcon speed tes, yeah i thought the latency /ping wouldve dropped heaps from copper to fibre, so the firmware for the modem will update automatcally then?

VDSL/UFB has a very good last mile ping. There is very little difference between the 2 latency wise. The majority of the ping you are seeing is backhauling the traffic from your area to the speedtest server.

So from adsl to vdsl then ufb my latency basically hasnt changed and give or take a couple ms so how is ufb better for gaming. So how can I test the ping from modem to cabinet when I tracert it always rejects the that section with failed or 1800ms connection

We've commonly called out the benefits of UFB as being able to carry out a typical households requirements simultaneously, streaming, gaming etc.

I'm not aware of where we have said a faster throughput technology such as UFB makes gaming better per se. Can you point me to where we claim/advise that?

Most likely your connected via GPON and your cabinet is just a passive device. The connection between the ONT and Orcon's handover point is a layer 2 connection our PPP session most likely lives on Orcon's BNG, what you cant see is how many routers there are in path.

Anyway 20ms is dam good is dam good and if the difference between 10ms and 20ms makes a difference the latency will be cause on your PC or network, if your using wireless no doubt that will be adding some latency depending on the load of the channel at the time. Just doing a speedtest/ping test isent a good mesure to show your latency, what you really need to do is ping the IP address of the serives you wish to use, as ping the Orcon's speedtest server shows your latency to that server and that server alone different locations WILL show different latency's.

if you were already on a 1ms VDSL profile, you would have seen about a 2ms drop, if that.

VDSL is pushing that fine line of already being low latency.

your biggest benefit for gaming on fiber, is you likely have more bandwith available, so its harder to fill the pipe and start clogging things. you also no longer have a copper product controlled by DLM which arguably is the worst thing for gaming - you never know unless you meter watch when your gonna wake up and be moved back a profile to 8ms and need to wait a few weeks for it drop back down to 1ms.

test your latency to a local server (within your city if possible.)

for me, on VDSL, i get 4~5ms to telecoms zeus server in auckland, i wouldnt expect this to drop very much more at all.

if im not mistaken, isnt a regional BNG required for UFB...

Thanks for the replies . I will ping some local servers nelson tonight . I presume my 19ms is to auckland or the north island somewhere. Should I use tracert , or speedtest.org
