Hi. A while ago I had Orcon Techs try to roll back the firmware to support Teamspeak and it resulted in no internet for 4 days and a new router being sent out. My flatmates wont let me attempt this again due to the risk of no internet.

Asides from switching ISP, it doesn't seem like I have any options left and I'm required to use Teamspeak and have a stable connection to it if I want to keep gaming.

So I had a few questions:

- Can I use a third party router while still having VOIP. Customer support says no, but that would be so horrible that I refuse to believe it
- Will you ever update the firmware with a fix, so people with this issue don't have to suffer the risk of a rollback going wrong or seek alternative methods

To be frank, Teamspeak is widely used in the gaming community. Incompatibility caused by router firmware is an unacceptable fault, please update the firmware.

I also need help with buying a non-ridiculously-expensive third party router if it's an option. I have to be certain it will support all features.

Sorry to bring it up again but a solution didn't happen. Actually when I got the new router sent out I was surprised and rather dismayed to find the compatible firmware wasn't on it and gave up. But now it's pretty much an I need to fix it or can't raid thing.

I would just add that a modem being bricked by upgrade/downgrade is extremely rare. Your chances of this happening again are very low.

Right, I worked with you last time. The issue with the last firmware upgrade/downgrade was that the modem was interrupted mid upgrade which of course - bricked the device!

Couple of options here

roll back to the working firmware - just make sure the device isn't interrupted
we can send out a the Netcom modem which we know works on Team Speak - there may be a monthly rental charge which partly because this is what we send for our VDSL customers - not ADSL, that however can be discussed out of the public eye
or, you could use Mumble, Skype.

Unfortunately I disagree with your statement about Team Speak being widely used. IMO, TS is the grandfather, and dying out to the likes of Skype or Mumble, at least in my own gaming circles.

Let us know how you want to proceed

I'm playing a lot of FFXIV and Wildstar, virtually everyone uses TS. I'd love to use Mumble or Vent (not skype, though!) but it's not my decision as raid groups and guilds all have their own requirements and wont change just for one/a couple, of people (me/orcon customers). Certainly showing no signs of dying out, unfortunately. And the people I've known for a long time and play with (would rather not change that!) require TS.

The option I'd choose is easily the Netcom modem. For my flatmates there is no risk of something going wrong (they wont accept anything >0%). We have a courier bag for the first router by the way, it's packed up and ready to go and I've filled out a courier pickup request just now so you will have it easily before the end of the week.

Let me know what you find out about the Netcom modem monthly rental charge and we can go from there.

I can vouch for the netcomm modem. It's extremely solid and well made. Probably THE modem that everyone should be on.
General feedback. Netcomm nf4v should be widely used on all plans/connections. The Genius just ain't cutting it.

We are only supplying NF4Vs on new UFB and VDSL connections already. It will supersede the Genius Black on ADSL over time.

TS still pretty commonly used in my gaming circles.

Ventrilo has died out, but TS still going strong.

You are providing a internet service, with a modem - then it should be fix for use - this person use include team speak, and with orcon modem, that a problem, so orcon should paying for the netcom modem or roll out a firmware update that fixes the issue. Does not matter if TS not widely used, a protocol should not crash a modem, if the service was just for http, pop, imap then yeah you might have a point in charging more for a modem but you are selling a internet service - which includes TS.

It doesn't look like this will be resolved, they tell me I need to sign another 12 month contract if I want the white modem. I am trying to overcome a *fault* with orcon's *mandatory* hardware. I don't want it because it's shiny. We'd sooner break our current contract than sign another one if this is what it takes just for an application to function, there really is no excuse for incompatibility.

This is quite upsetting, I hope there is a solution.

There is - we can downgrade the firmware on the modem.

and downgrade security? generally, most firmware updates include security updates

Last time it resulted in a bricked router for whatever reason and no internet for four days. My flatmates wont risk it and they shouldn't have to, however small that risk is. I shouldn't be penalized for a fault in Orcon's mandatory hardware.

Nope, doesn't affect security. "Generally" doesn't apply in this specific case.

The version of firmware that fixes this issue isn't available on our warehouse stock. It is only available by onsite downgrade.

The question was asked of us what price the Genius White, the answer is free if you re-contract. Otherwise it will attract a rental charge. Both options are available but they are the only options available.
