Hi friends

Not sure if this is going to be an issue with Orcon itself or my PC in the end.

The last couple of days my internet (using wireless from black orcon genius) is painfully slow, speedtest.net results have been fluctuating between 0.89Mbps to 3.49Mbps, the funny thing is that this is happening only on my desktop, my wifes laptop is getting 12Mbps average. I've updated the Ralink drivers to no avail.

Have scanned for viruses and malware.

I've searched the web and theres a million different fixes, a lot of which seem dodgy or involve downloading a bunch of third party applications.

Ive also noticed in the last hour or two that the wireless signal strength has been fluctuating between 2-4 bars, however once again, my wife who is 2 feet from me is getting full strength with no fluctuation.

I'm not savvy with this sort of stuff so figured I would make a post here and hopefully come across some help / advice

My desktop is under warranty so I'm thinking if all else fails maybe getting it looked at as to if its the wireless card or something along those lines.

Thanks in advance

Kyle

EDIT: As per the automated bots request:

- Your ISP and plan Orcon Unlimited
- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL) ADSL
- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin) If anyone can point me to where to find this then I will happily post this information
- Your general location (or street) Shirley Christchurch
- If you are rural or urban Rural
- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin - Exchange
- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service ??

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Can you use a network cable rather than WiFi for your desktop?

I would absolutely love too, however the desktop is located in the bedroom ( 1 room from the modem) and cant be moved as theres no room in there :P

There is an ethernet cable connected to the xbox out there (I dont own the XBox) so its just not an option.

To be noted though is that this issue has only arisen in the past 2 days and I"ve never had an issue with the signal or speeds before now, apart from when people are downloading which im made aware of and when orcon has had its downtime due to flooding and earthquakes down here.

All points to the desktop's wifi - the fact that your wife's laptop can get 12Mbps proves the line, modem and wireless is all working correctly.

Might be worth checking the desktop hasn't inadvertently been set to WiFi a/b/g instead of n...

Or the Desktop simply has low WiFi coverage.

or the desktop is in range of another wireless device on an overlapping channel and the other computer is not.

Or the desktop has been shoved into a corner with the small antenna on the adapter facing away from the router, whereas the laptop has the 2 nice large screen mounted antennas working in its favour.

Or any number of other misconfigurations on the desktop that would also show themselves if you tested it on a cable to rule out wifi problems.

have you considered getting a switch connecting that to said cable, and then running the single line from the modem to both the desktop, and the xbox?

I have that same problem to or if its not that, it ends up doing the funky dance with my router and not allow anyone to use the internet till I reboot the modem.
