Hey there, new to this forum!

However I'm in need of some help! As of ~25th of May, my household has been experiencing 'normal' usable internet, however the gamers of the household have been experiencing very high pings, from the usual of ~50ms to now 300-800ms ping fluctuations.

Specifically games such as Dota 2 we are experiencing this. We are currently using Orcon's Unlimited ADSL plan, however after about the 25th of May, our speeds and pings to these games have been greatly exponentiated.

Using the Orcon's speedtest, I am getting results of about 30 to 110 ping, and I find this is quite unacceptable especially if it's pinging from a NZ server. I'm currently using a Laptop, connecting through ethernet cable to the internet. Is there a way to pinpoint the problem? Is it an internet fault? perhaps traffic? Or is it just the games we are playing?

The Australian Server pinging to is syd.valve.net [103.10.125.1], my IP is 121.99.215.23 if that helps. :o

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

well you haven't listed any of the websites or ip's of the servers so no one else is able to check to see if there is an issue

try a tracert to the effected server and post the results

Well it definitely is not congestion on the Orcon trans-Tasman links. My ping and throughput are the same and have been stable all afternoon but without knowing what servers you are giving to I can't tell any more - always could be an issue within Oz of course.

Likely to be other traffic on your line (especially upload traffic affects downstream and ping if the upstream is heavily loaded - torrent seeding, cloud syncing etc can all do this).

To prove it simply disconnect all devices (unplug wired and disable wireless on the modem), then use one machine to test when connected by ethernet cable to the modem.

If you still think there is an issue then pm me you account number or log a fault ticket through the Orcon website and pm me the ticket number you get by return.

Up to 4/5/14 you were uploading approx 3-500MB daily, since then it has risen and you are currently uploading circa 2-3GB daily - that WILL cause congestion on the upstream which will affect the downstream. It isn't a factor of your plan but due to a fundamental of how TCP-IP networks work.

Whatever your flatmates say, seeding/torrenting IS going on...I'm getting steady 40ms:
